Report: Riots break out at Foxconn factory in China
Source: NBC News
Reports early Monday from China suggest that a mass disturbance or riots may have broken out at a Foxconn factory in the Chinese city of Taiyuan. It is still unclear what exactly happened, but posts on China’s popular twitter-like service, Weibo, from users in the area show photographs and video of large numbers of police in and around the factory – many in riot gear – blocking off throngs of people. Other photos show debris strewn around the Foxconn compound and in one case, an overturned guard tower. According to popular tech blog engadget, the disturbance kicked off after Foxconn security guards allegedly hit a worker around 10 p.m. on Sunday. 1. According to Romney, a mob of people must've broken in looking for jobs.

'Course it takes most of us 12 years of schooling to really make sure people always look to someone else for their answers. Sounds like they might have tried to think for themselves. Maybe they are leaving a step out. |

And I wasn't being sarcastic. I'm really wondering if it will start to seem "not worth it" or "too uncertain" to manufacture overseas.
And I'm not above flogging "instability." Or the concept of "blood iPhones." Right now the Chinese government says nobody died and I can't find one picture of the riot in progress. Everything seems to be aftermath. But how did they manage to turn over a cop car? And where did the rumor of ten dead come from? |

21. If you think that's hyperbole
|
I suggest you take a look at real wages over the past 30 - 40 years - among other economic data. Where do you think the vast wealth that has been transferred to the 1% has come from?

22. Why cheapen the misery of those employees?
|
Yes, wages suck in the US and the workers are getting the shaft HOWEVER we still don't have it nearly as bad as those folks at Foxxcom and shame on you for likening our situation to theirs!
If things were as sucky for US workers as China then WHY do companies send work to China? Yeah, hyperbole. You could make the very valid point about US wages without it. Julie--who lives the low wage nightmare for real and knows it ain't like the China nightmare |

29. it was not my intent to imply equivalence - and I regret
|
that I left that impression or distressed you. I have been a low-wage worker myself for long stretches of time in my life (and feel lucky that that is not the case now) and my own daughter is stuck trying to support a family on minimum wage jobs. I would never either dismiss the sufferings and oppressions of the workers who are the victims of the multi-nationals abroad, or at home - but neither am I unaware that we are not yet consigned to the Company Barracks and Store under armed guards. If it sounded as if that's what I meant, I can understand your original comment - which had baffled me.
The post I responded to said: We'll have the same system that they have if Romney gets in office... The lower our pay the more the rich will make.
I took the writer to be saying that the system we would have under Romney would be "The lower our pay the more the rich will make." I merely pointed out that that is indeed the case and has been for some time - armed guards or no. I regret that I left the impression I was making light of the plight of workers - in China or anywhere. |

Yes, the standard accoutrement for any factory: The guard tower. I wonder if they use the model with machine guns and search lights. |

That plant makes some components for the iphone 5. Apparently a worker was beaten and this is the reason for the riot, it was the last straw for people who have long complained about harsh conditions imposed by management. The lines of riot police remind me of home. |

I'm beginning to feel ridiculously righteous for avoiding their products. Their business model stinks. I'm sure what I'm typing on is no more righteous, but I know what Apple is doing and has done for years. |

14. Workers Refuse to be “Bained” - Riots break out at Foxconn factory in China
|
According to WantChinaTimes in January, Terry Gou, the head of Hon Hai (Foxconn), the largest contract manufacturer in the world, had this to say at a recent meeting with his senior managers:
"Hon Hai has a workforce of over one million worldwide and as human beings are also animals, to manage one million animals gives me a headache," said Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou at a recent year-end party, adding that he wants to learn from Chin Shih-chien, director of the Taipei Zoo, regarding how animals should be managed.

.. and posted similar article in GD. Anyway, this is the investment classes worst nightmare. If people in their sweatshops in China and elsewhere start demanding fair wages and treatment, the game is over.
