Block the Vote: College EditionLast edited Sat Sep 22, 2012, 12:29 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by muriel_volestrangler (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). In Tennessee, a new law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls explicitly excludes student IDs. In Wisconsin, college students are newly disallowed from using university-provided housing lists or corroboration from other students to verify their residence. Florida's reduction in early voting days is expected to reduce the number of young and first-time voters there. And Pennsylvania's voter identification bill, still on the books for now, disallows many student IDs and non-Pennsylvania driver's licenses, which means out-of-state students may be turned away at the polls. In 2008, youth voter turnout was higher that it had been since Vietnam, and overwhelmingly for Barack Obama. This time around, the GOP isn't counting solely on disillusionment to keep the student vote down. No link yet. If you know a college kid that supports President Obama and the Democrats, make sure that they are OK to vote TODAY! Registration deadlines in many states are fast approaching. LET'S BE SMART ABOUT THIS!

2. You have not provided a link, and your title does not match the actual article title
|
both of which are required in LBN (the link, for others, is http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/22/voter-id-laws-gop-college-student_n_1791568.html ).
Also, it doesn't look like 'latest breaking news' (there's no new event described in it), but an article rounding up the way voter ID laws affect students in various states. Would you consider reposting it in one of the Politics 2012, General Discussion, or Good Reads forums? It would fit the Statement of Purpose of any of those forums. |

3. Ah, back in the day

this sort of behavior would have resulted in a large number of dead republican election officials, until things changed. Today? Nothing.
We've lost the American spirit. |

6. Don't worry kids, you may not be able to vote but you can still fight and die for your country.
|
Your student ID wont count for anything at the polls, but neither will your military ID. So stupid cowards will be the only ones left able to vote.

8. Short early voting hours will make it difficult for my college son to vote
|
By by GOD, even though we're in a highly red state, he's going to vote. I'm taking a half day of vacation time to drive down and get him back home before early voting closes at 5 PM. It's absolutely fucking STUPID, closing the polling places at 5 PM and no early voting on Saturday.

<...> The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University has a student voting guide that includes information for each state. ( http://www.brennancenter.org/content/student_voting/ ) And the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is supplementing its election protection hotline with a smartphone app that provides voter registration, registration status verification, polling place information, voting rules and contact information for election protection staffers. in reality there will be only a few paths to take. The Republicans are playing a very dangerous game.

The LBN hosts feel this is a feature, not late breaking news, and thus should be in either the Politics 2012, General Discussion, or Good Reads forum. Please feel free to repost it in one of those forums, and include the link to the full article in it (there is no requirement to use the article's title as the thread title in those other forums, however).
