BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — Hundreds of protesters angry over last week's killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya stormed the compound of the Islamic extremist militia suspected in the attack, evicting militiamen and setting fire to their building Friday.

In an unprecedented show of public anger at Libya's rampant militias, the crowd overwhelmed the compound of the Ansar al-Shariah Brigade in the center of the eastern city of Benghazi.

For many Libyans, the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was the last straw in one of the biggest problems Libya has faced since the ouster and death of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi around a year ago — the multiple mini-armies that with their arsenals of machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades are stronger than the regular armed forces and police.

...

Other signs mourned the killing of Stevens, reading, "The ambassador was Libya's friend" and "Libya lost a friend." Military helicopters and fighter jets flew overhead, and police mingled in the crowd, buoyed by the support of the protesters.

2. Perhaps 9 killed in the storming of the 2nd militia base

The HQ of the Sahaty Brigade, said to have official backing, was also stormed. At least nine people were killed there, another died elsewhere.

However, in a standoff outside the headquarters of the Sahaty Brigade in the city, three people were killed and at least 20 injured according to witnesses and officials.

Another person was killed and another 20 injured in other incidents, city hospitals said.

On Saturday, sources said the bodies of six people had been found. They had been shot "execution-style".

Which side the dead were on seems unclear so far.

3. I hope they catch all of the bad guys who had anything to do

with the killing of our countrymen. Think of the suffering that might have been brought on to everyone in Libya, if the knee jerk jerks in the GOP had been in the White House.

5. The militias are armed, the citizens aren't, and they're going in anyway.

May the God of us all bless them.

8. When the Ambassador was murdered, my rw niece said

"I wish George W was still president. He would show Libya who's boss!" I said really? I'm sure this story won't make it past her right wing filter and she'll never know (or care.)

9. American Militias

Please take note. You are NOT popular with the US population so either. REAL militias answered to the state government and accepted national command authority. They did not swear to uphold the Constitution, and then reserve the right to determine from whom.

10. That's awesome, true foreign policy at work.

You have to win the people if you expect to win the state.
