Mitt Romney Campaign Gave Bonuses To Top Staffers, Disclosure Records Show
Source: Huffington Post
Mitt Romney's presidential campaign gave bonuses to four top staffers, according to new disclosure records released Thursday. The campaign handed out a total of $112,500 in bonuses on August 31, one day after Romney formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the party convention in Tampa. The Washington Post reports: Richard Beeson, Romney’s national political director, received a $37,500 payment on Aug. 31, in addition to his monthly salary of $13,750, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission. In addition, campaign manager Matt Rhoades, policy advisor Lanhee Chen and communications director Gail Gitcho each received $25,000 payments on the same date, filings show. The trio are also paid at the same rate as Beeson, which works out to an annual equivalent of $165,000. Earlier this week, the campaign confirmed that it took out a $20 million loan in August to fund the campaign prior to the Republican National Convention. Although Romney had beat Obama in fundraising from May through July, much of that money was designated for the general election. When primary funds ran low, the campaign took out the loan to make do until Romney was officially nominated and the full campaign coffers could be tapped. Of COURSE they gave bonuses. That's what these people DO!
There is a lot of political campaign money swirling around a raft of acquisitive loophole-finders. Hell, they probably pay bonuses on hiring consulting firms they own, in order to reccomend management firms in which they share a half interest with a Bahamian trust owned by an insurance company in which they are all directors. If that money buys a single TV ad, I'll be shocked they let a dollar get out the door alive. |

15. For club membership
|
They are all part of the same club - to move money into their various accounts in pretense of doing some kind of work for society - be it board membership of corporations or other things. They set themselves up to enjoy the largesse of the society and then turn around to call us - unlucky ones - "slobs".

10. The bonuses are rediculous
|
But so is the fact that he can borrow money before the convention and then turn around and pay it back after the convention. It's a form of money laundering.

17. He's just looking out for his soon-to-be unemployed staffers. As of Nov. 7, they'll be out of work.

He can tell them, each and every one, "You're gonna be my new Secretary of State," but they know by now it ain't gonna happen.

Can you imagine being a working-class Republican and donating a hard-earned check for $50 or $100 to Romney's campaign, only to find out that he gave $192,440 in bonuses to his senior staffers?
Incidentally, the amount according to the NYT article was $192,440: Another set of expenditures is likely to draw grumbles from Mr. Romney’s allies given his campaign’s current struggles: The day after accepting the Republican nomination, Mr. Romney gave what appeared to be $192,440 in bonuses to senior campaign staff members. At least nine aides received payments on Aug. 31 well in excess of their typical biweekly salaries, including $25,000 each for Matthew Rhoades, the campaign manager; Lanhee Chen, a policy adviser; and Katie Biber, the general counsel. Rich Beeson, the political director, received $37,500. |
