Marco Rubio, In Mitt Romney Ad, Argues For Changes To Medicare

Source: Huffington Post

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) appears in an ad for the Mitt Romney campaign released Thursday, making the case that changes to Medicare are necessary in order to protect the country's seniors.

“Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan get it. Medicare is going broke,” Rubio says in the ad. “That’s not politics. It’s math. Anyone who wants to leave Medicare like it is, is for letting it go bankrupt. My mother’s 81 and depends on Medicare.”

“We can save Medicare without changing hers," he continues. "But only if younger Americans accept that our Medicare will be different than our parents,' when we retire in 30 years. But after all they did for us, isn’t that the least we can do?”

Although he was not chosen as the GOP vice presidential nominee, Rubio has been one of Romney's strongest surrogates. He participated in a conference call Wednesday with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus to discuss the party's renewed focus on branding this a "choice election" -- something President Barack Obama's campaign has done from the very beginning of the cycle.

1. I will re-state what's been said many times about the repub medicare plan

They're counting on seniors to be as selfish as they are; they fully expect the current or soon to be recipients of medicare to say, "I'ma get mine...good luck getting yours, kids!"

"Our Medicare will be DIFFERENT from our parents'" Yeah. Different.

2. And once they change it for the young people, their next appeal will be ...

... you're paying for benefits for old people that you'll never get. Do you really want to keep paying for those benefits?

3. I can't understand the so called "Christians" in good faith

would point blank lie to the American Public. By 2016 Medicare as we know it will be no more under their plan, and this asshole makes an ad spewing the lie that medicare is better off under a GOP administration? And probably feels no pain because he himself and his immediate family members are protected by excellent healthcare insurance which the tax payers paid for, the very tax payer who paid taxes all of their working lives to secure SSI and medicare to be there for themselves and these MF want to give it all away for PROFIT. SHAMEFUL

5. How about resolving the Medicare crisis by cutting costs now, by getting Americans to walk more and

eat less corn and fatty foods? If Americans got out of their cars and off their couches, we would have less morbid obesity, less diabetes, and less of some other diseases. We could spend a little less on Medicare. We could also drink and smoke less. All of these things would bring down our demand for medical care and lower the amount we spend on medical care.

You don't think that will work? Maybe it wouldn't allow us to do away with Medicare, but it would help lower costs. Even if we improve our health a lot, however, as we learn more about disease and how to deal with it, Rubio is right about one thing.

Medicare costs will continue to rise as we find more ways to increase longevity.

So, translate Rubio's statement into real-talk: If you are under 55, the 1% in America plan to cut your Medicare so that they can keep more of the benefits of technology and increased productivity for themselves. You are to be our slaves, and when you are too old to work -- miserable, painful deaths for you.

What the Republicans really want is to divide the young from the old and persuade the young to defund Medicare now in order to save for themselves. It won't happen. When the under 55s are in their 70s, the rich will tell THEM that their medical care is too expensive and THEY should just die instead.

7. You are right as far as getting Americans into better shape goes.

However, hospitals and insurance companies and Pharma will never ever ever settle for lowered profits - so we will continue to be charged for $400 aspirins and such. It is the profit motive that is driving costs, mostly. In my opinion, of course!
Single payer needs to happen, along with getting healthier.

6. "After all they did for us."

Seriously? You mean voting in Nixon? Reagan? Bush? You mean destroying the middle class and sending all the jobs overseas? Perhaps it was all the good American companies that were took over, gutted and left to rot? All for a little money now? Was it the ignorance of climate change? Is that what they did for us? Yeah, thanks so much for all you did. It's important for you to be taken care of for making the world inhospitable to half the life on it. We owe you big time. Now that you have turned the greatest country in the world into a banana republic for your own shortsighted love of money and have destroyed things good Americans have spent a lifetime to build in the blink of an eye. Why, you should be commended. Besides, who will need access to healthcare as the country explodes with diseases and famine brought on by your own ignorance and greed? Just go the way of the Dodo. Please. Let the people who really care about things like liberty & justice for ALL, like freedom for ALL, try to salvage what is left of the country we love before its all owned by Saudi Princes and global corporations. Or as you would refer to them, your base.
How lost are the words of Lincoln in your party today? "With malice towards none and charity for all." He would weep to see the shallow depths of your patriotism.

8. Yeah. It needs changing. Stop the crooks who are over-charging and double-charging. Problem solved

Lots of criminals ripping off Medicare and Medicaid. I had a personal experience involving Medicare. A collection agency kept bugging me about some charge I never paid. They were going to report it to the credit bureau. A doctor I never saw/never heard of and a hospital I wasn't at on the date suggested were charging Medicare, and myself, for treatment I never received. They used my social security number to do it, even though I wasn't even on Medicare...still not. When I called the doctor, the hospital, and Medicare to report it, not one of them gave a shit. The hospital (Memorial in Hollywood, FL) wouldn't even correct the huge, major mistake...they'd only mark it as paid. Check your bills carefully, people. GOP puppets are trying to get you to jump off the cliff with them. Don't listen to anything they say. Fight for single-payer healthcare and this bullshit will stop.
