Mitt Romney Week From Hell Prompts Republican Freak-Out

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by muriel_volestrangler (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

WASHINGTON -– Republicans could use a bit of advice from an unlikely source right now: Obama adviser David Plouffe, who in 2010 told Democrats worried about the mid-term elections, "No bed-wetting."

Now it's Republicans who are frightened. Mitt Romney's recent troubles have created a sense of gloom, and a good dose of doom, in the Grand Old Party.

"I think there is a broad and growing feeling now, among Republicans, that this thing is slipping out of Romney’s hands," wrote the Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan, in a "come to Jesus," in-your-face column posted on Tuesday night.

Noonan is correct.

After going from a Democratic convention that gave President Barack Obama a bump, to Romney's bumbling handling of Middle East unrest, to a story about campaign infighting, and now with the release of a secretly taped video of Romney, numerous Republicans said there is now a sense of siege.

"There's a feeling of almost that this thing's in free fall," said a Republican consultant with deep experience on Capitol Hill and extensive contacts in the Romney campaign. "When campaigns spend an enormous amount of time trying to figure out why they're broken, I don't know if they ever come back," said this Republican, who like others who spoke about their frustration, did not want to be identified.

1. Delicious.

I'm down for some real second-term hope and change.

16. The only thing shiny about their turds is that they're always fresh and wet.

They keep shitting themselves, usually on a daily basis.

4. I swear there's going to be a film

. . . a comedy based on the Romney campaign. This thing is actually becoming slapstick.

I'm waiting to see what bungling misstep will Romney and his Party make next week. It's been so regular, and whenever it happens the press says, "He just lost election." When actually he lost the election a month ago. What he's doing now is ruining other Republicans' elections. I'm betting he's not being brought in to speak in favor of any other candidate.

And the truly amazing thing: Obama was supposed to be Hitler, the most oppressive leader, the worst president ever, and Repubs can only put up Daffy Duck against him. The delusion and the implosion here is incredible.

5. I don't think we have seen the bottom yet

The debates are coming and Romney is going to have to explain his positions for the next seven weeks.

Wait for the tax returns to surface, when we find out Mitt is, in fact, a felon.

6. That retching sound you hear

is coming from down-ticket GOP candidates puking into their wastebaskets.

If I were a GOP candidate in a tight race, I would be frantic.

7. What do these fools expect?

They've been trying to sell the country a damaged, piece of crap, fascist, and the country ain't buying. Romney has been exposed for the smarmy prick he truly is. There is no campaign strategy that will change what, and who he is, or promote how they WANT him to be seen. There simply isn't enough turd polish. He is and always has been a loser, just like those that support him.

It's just starting to dawn on them that they can lose.

13. This all is self inflicted damage

not traceable to the Obama campaign in any way. Obama has not even begun to fight. It does give him a lot of time to run the country however, and for that we should thank Romney.

Romney is the most incompetent major party presidential candidate ever.

17. rMoney's team attempted to paint Obama as Hitler/Marx and rMoney as the calm, collected businesman.

Reality set in and we find that Obama is handling being the most powerful leader in the world and the only adult in the room, while rMoney keeps spilling the Kool-Aid at the little kids' table because he shakes his fist and leaps while his legs are still tucked underneath.

This is what happens when you choose a narrative that's so far from reality that nothing can bring it back.

19. Locking, as not LBN

Mod feeling is this is analysis, with anonymous Republican quotes (and a quote from a Tuesday article), rather than a news event. Please feel free to repost in Politics 2012, GD or Good Reads.
