Base where Prince Harry is stationed stormed by heavily armed insurgents, two Marines killed
Source: National Post
WASHINGTON — Heavily armed insurgents attacked a British air base in southern Afghanistan Friday, killing two U.S. Marines and wounding several other troops, U.S. officials said. Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is stationed at the base on a four-month combat tour in Afghanistan. There was no immediate word on his whereabouts at the time of the attack. U.S. officials said the attack at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan’s Helmand province involved a range of insurgent weaponry, possibly including mortars, rockets or rocket-propelled grenades, as well as small arms fire. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because U.S. military authorities in Afghanistan had not yet announced the battle. 1. Probably soon to be the base where Prince Harry used to be stationed...

The CO's probably making arrangements to get him out of there now.

7. No. I posted an AP article that cited the taliban
|
As saying they would try to kidnap or kill the prince.
What should alarm people is that the Taliban still seem to be able to strike where they want - in spite of the occupation, money spent & lives lost. |

From the article linked in the OP:
It also was not clear Friday whether the attack was linked at all to the protests and violence across the Muslim world this week that has been linked to an anti-Islamic film. Afghanistan’s southern region has been a hotbed of the insurgency and frequent attacks. |

the circumstances surrounding the Prince are strange as well, I've heard it suggested that he was sent to Afghanistan to divert attention form the nude Vegas photos. What a crazy, strange, weird world we live in.

Much more likely that the Vegas thing was a pre-deployment party instead.

Keep in mind he also thinks the solution in Afghanistan is "keep killing them until they stop," so he also thinks open warfare is simply that easy too.

41. Why the hell should it? US spends millions to kill one "insurgent".
|
They spend a small company of insurgents and a couple of thousand dollars of their own to kill one US soldier, you spend/expend tens of millions chasing the wind and building up ill will by taking revenge on women and children.
And when presented with opportunity, just ONE of them all too often manages to take out several of our own boys, with a weapon we put in his hands for "training purposes". The United States has already beggared itself pursuing the wars it already has and you want to double down? |

Last edited Sat Sep 15, 2012, 03:36 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) There is no Afghan war. Afghanis by and large support the US and its Afghan allies.
The REAL war is in Pakistan. You silence Pakistan and Afghans will be free. The cost of a few airstrikes to destroy Pakistani military and intelligence capabilities will be the difference between winning the Afghan war and losing it so badly that as soon as we leave, terrorist elements take over and repeat something like 9/11. |

The problem with fighting a guerrilla insurgency is getting the enemy to mass their forces on a field of your choosing where you can bring superior firepower to bear. Harry is catnip to the Taliban and they are taking advantage of it. They will probably move him to a remote base and keep it a poorly guarded secret.
