Muhammad Film Consultant: 'Sam Bacile' is Not Israeli, and Not a Real Name
Source: The Atlantic
As part of my search for more information about Sam Bacile, the alleged producer of the now-infamous anti-Muhammad film trailer "The Innocence of Muslims," I just called a man named Steve Klein -- a self-described militant Christian activist in Riverside, California (whose actual business, he said, is in selling "hard-to-place home insurance"), who has been described in multiple media accounts as a consultant to the film. Klein told me that Bacile, the producer of the film, is not Israeli, and most likely not Jewish, as has been reported, and that the name is, in fact, a pseudonym. He said he did not know "Bacile"'s real name. He said Bacile contacted him because he leads anti-Islam protests outside of mosques and schools, and because, he said, he is a Vietnam veteran and an expert on uncovering al Qaeda cells in California. "After 9/11 I went out to look for terror cells in California and found them, piece of cake. Sam found out about me. The Middle East Christian and Jewish communities trust me." He said the man who identified himself as Bacile asked him to help make the anti-Muhammad film. When I asked him to describe Bacile, he said: "I don't know that much about him. I met him, I spoke to him for an hour. He's not Israeli, no. I can tell you this for sure, the State of Israel is not involved, Terry Jones (the radical Christian Quran-burning pastor) is not involved. His name is a pseudonym. All these Middle Eastern folks I work with have pseudonyms. I doubt he's Jewish. I would suspect this is a disinformation campaign." I asked him who he thought Sam Bacile was. He said that there are about 15 people associated with the making of the film, "Nobody is anything but an active American citizen. They're from Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, they're some that are from Egypt. Some are Copts but the vast majority are Evangelical." 10. Signs point to Christian fundamentalists from the US
|
Huffington Post, today: "Though Bacile is a mystery, we do know a bit more about Steve Klein, who told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he was a "consultant" on Bacile's film. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the former Marine was part of the controversial California "Church at Kawea," near Fresno, and a member of a "secretive cohort of militant fundamentalists" preparing for war against Muslims in spring 2012. He believed that California was riddled with Muslim Brotherhood sleeper cells "who are awaiting the trigger date and will begin randomly killing as many of us as they can."
Klein is currently listed as the "Secretary and Founder" of Courageous Christians United, a group that protests outside of Mormon temples, mosques and abortion clinics. Leah Nelson of the SPLC said Klein founded the group back in 1977. Multiple requests for comment from Courageous Christians United have gone unreturned, but Klein himself spoke with the Atlantic's Goldberg on Wednesday afternoon." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/12/sam-bacile-film_n_1878060.html |

... given there are several conflicting reports on who Sam Bacile is.
" I'm taking everything about this strange and horrible episod with a grain of salt, though I will say that I haven't seen any proof yet that Sam Bacile is an actual Israeli Jew, or that the name is anything other than a pseudonym. More to come, undoubtedly." It looks like Mr. Goldberg is taking his journalistic duty seriously. |

Or, he really does know who it is and isn't saying. What I don't understand is how all these news medias interviewed "Bacile"? There are several articles here and out in the web, where there are direct quotes from this person.

16. The Wall Street journal had first phone interview with "Bacile", then an AP reporter
|
But seems they probably should have done a little more investigation and fact-checking, before taking his word about $5million film.

that so many here picked up on the "American-Israeli Jew" thing right away and ran with it, like it was a given that someone of that demographic would have done this.

20. Anyone think this could be a counter-intelligence operation?
|
... either by the intelligence service of an unfriendly country or by Al Queda or Al Queda-type group? One or more intelligence agents infiltrates this group of wing-nut evangelicals (or itself constitutes the group); suggests the film and provides part (or all) of the funding; translates the finished product into Arabic; puts it on Youtube; informs the right people about the Youtube post (which is why it is picked up by a television station immediately and broadcast, rather than going ignored as one would expect it normally would have); protests and riots ensue; and the attack on the Libyan embassy is timed to coincide, in the hopes of precipitating a disproportionate American military response -- more likely in an election season. Crazy?

22. If so, I'm not sure it was particularly well executed
|
I think the sad fact is that the film production was the misguided work of some Egyptian Coptic Christians based in California associated with a small virulently Islamophobic group called the National American Coptic Assembly.

judging by its terrible website, NACA and Sadek (the org's president) appear to lack the money and organizational capacity needed to have put even this amateur movie together, assuming the cast and crew were paid. Sedak appears to be NACA's only member, and both he and the org seem to be based in Virginia, near D.C., not in California, where the film was supposedly shot. And the reporting suggests Sedak was the guy who translated the film and posted it on Youtube, but not the one who produced it. We'll know more, I expect, when we learn who funded the film. Most probably, this was a combination of coincidences so unlikely that, in retrospect, they appear planned -- even though they were not. For now, a fascinating but tragic mystery.

23. Another DU post referencing Gawker, says actor called Bacile and threatened to sue him....
|
From the gawker article:
After the protests erupted and Bacile appeared in the media, Garcia called him up today to express her outrage at his deception. "I called Sam and said, 'Why did you do this?' and he said, 'I'm tired of radical Islamists killing each other. Let other actors know it's not their fault.'" Garcia isn't satisfied simply knowing it wasn't her fault. "I'm going to sue his butt off." http://gawker.com/5942748 |
