Michigan Sec of State keeping citizen check-off boxThis discussion thread was locked as off-topic by cyberswede (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). September 9, 2012 at 1:32 am Michigan Sec of State keeping citizen check-off box By Jeff Karoub Associated Press Detroit — Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson vows that a check-off box asking voters to confirm their U.S. citizenship will once again appear on November ballot applications, raising concerns among voting rights advocates who argue it's unnecessary, intimidating and could suppress voting. Johnson defends her decision to keep the box she ordered in the February and August primary elections as a legal and appropriate extra step to ensure only citizens participate in elections — even after fellow Republican Gov. Rick Snyder recently vetoed a bill that included a requirement for voters to check a similar citizenship box. "The secretary of state has the authority under state law to prescribe forms, including the ballot application form," said department spokesman Fred Woodhams, who added this past week she's pressing forward after a coalition led by the nonpartisan Michigan Election Coalition said it sent her a letter urging her to "immediately halt" using the citizenship check-off. "Johnson added the citizenship checkbox to ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in Michigan elections," Woodhams said. "It also helps noncitizens who have inadvertently registered to vote by letting them know that it is not proper for them to vote." 3. The California voter reg form
|
Asks you, under penalty of perjury, to state: You are a US citizen; and you are 18 (or will be by the election). If you cannot answer yes to both questions you cannot register to vote (that part is in red).
In all the years voter registration, only one person has ever been a question for me. It was a guy who had been in prison and didn't think he could register to vote. He could because he had completed his parole. In 2016, California will begin election/same day registration. |

5. There are a bunch of ways to break this action down....
|
Last edited Sun Sep 9, 2012, 02:01 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) 1. Where is her Boss Governor Rick Snyder (R) on this? SOS Johnson did the exact same action with the August 7 primary a week AFTER his veto. Yet, to date, Snyder has yet to say anything about SOS Johnson defying what he refused to sign into law.
2. Now SOS Johnson is "doing it again". Per the quote in the Ann Arbor News from B of E (Bureau of Elections) Spokesperson Fred Woodhams.... "The secretary of state has the authority under state law to prescribe forms, including the ballot application form," said department spokesman Fred Woodhams, who added this past week she's pressing forward after a coalition led by the nonpartisan Michigan Election Coalition said it sent her a letter urging her to "immediately halt" using the citizenship check-off. http://www.annarbor.com/news/michigan-secretary-of-state-keeping-citizen-check-off-box/#.UEzVn41lSwc Say what??? So the SOS has the authority in Michigan to singularly override a veto by the Governor without a 2/3rd vote to overturn the veto, per Michigan's Constitution, because SOS Johnson says so. WOW!! 3. Which goes back to point one....why has Governor Snyder not said ANYTHING about this? It's getting very interesting in Michigan folks and tea-leaves are predicting that a bit of "election fixing" Ruth Johnson style might occur to ensure the Great Lakes 16 electoral votes fall in Romney's lap, regardless what Michigan voters decide.... 4. Also, mind you...we have "Perpetrated Election Fraud" on behalf of Michigan Speaker of the House Jase Bolger (R) AND former Democrat/turn Republican weeks before the May 15th State Candidate Primary Deadline Rep. Roy Schmidt; where they attempted paid a 22 year old young man $450.00 to run as a "Fake Democrat".....which is now before a Ingham County Grand Jury for possibly criminal charges AND.... 5. The Case of former Congressman Thad McCotter (R) who's staff, its' alleged, worked a copy/paste petition scandal scheme where over 75% of the 1000 registered voters signatures that were turned in May 15th on his behalf were FAKE. Four staffers have been criminally charged to date and more fall out from this story remains. Either way, the Congressman McCotter has resigned. 6. But, SOS Johnson (who heads the State Bureau of Elections too) is worried about including a illegal check box asking for Michigan residents "citizenship" on a ballot application? We are screwed in Michigan at the moment folks... |

7. It's the very first question on the FL voter registration application
|
Fl asks "Are you a citizen of the United States of America? YES/NO"
Was Michigan the only state in the US that didn't already ask this question? Since there are two major requirements to vote (be a US citizen and be at least 18 years of age), those would seem like legitimate questions to me. I randomly googled some other states applications: New York's asks "Are you a citizen of the U.S.? If the answer is NO, you cannot register to vote". Rhode Island's asks "I am a U.S. citizen and resident of Rhode Island. YES/NO". Illinois states that by signing, one swears and affirms that they are a U.S. citizen under penalty of perjury, by making false statements one may be fined, imprisoned, or if not a U.S., deported from the country. Some of these voter rights groups just seem to oppose everything. What is the ultimate goal? Not having to prove one's identity or answer any questions? Why even require voter registration, let's make it like American Idol and text it in. |
