Judge Hatch apologizes to victim

Judge Jacqueline Hatch has apologized for comments she made to a victim of sexual abuse while sentencing DPS officer Robb Gary Evans this week.
"I apologize to the victim for any additional anguish my comments may have caused," the Coconino County Superior Court judge said in a statement sent to the media on Friday afternoon. "It was never my intention to make a situation worse for any victim. I have learned an important lesson and will apply what I have learned to future cases, to ensure that the rights and views of all victims are heard and respected.
The comments came in the wake of public outcry after the judge's Wednesday comments at sentencing, which included the following to the victim about her visit to the bar: If you wouldnt have been there that night, none of this would have happened to you.
In an interview with the Daily Sun, the victim asked for Hatch to apologize and said such statements could deter other victims of sexual crimes from coming forward.

(12,482 posts)i always cringe at such things, hoping they won't be in texas. but arizona (and florida) can usually be counted on to take attention away from our crazies from time to time.

(27,137 posts)If she'd been at home safely behind chained and locked doors holding an aspirin between her knees -- this man, an obvious slave (and a victim) to his God-given, natural sexual urges -- would never have assaulted and raped her and none of this would have ever happened!!! So this is mostly the victim's fault for not avoiding placing herself in harm's way!!! Why it's as plain as day!!!
- What a fucking putz. She needs to be removed from the bench. And quickly before she opens her mouth again.......

(61,539 posts)Her actual words:
Hatch said that the victim was not to blame in the case, but that all women must be vigilant against becoming victims. Hatch also said that even going to the grocery store after 10 p.m. can be dangerous for a woman.
When you blame others, you give up your power to change, Hatch said that her mother used to say.

(1,295 posts)that is not a sincere apology.
An apology is for something you DID not IF you did or IF ANY offense was taken.

But since you are in the Republik of Arizona, Jan Brewer is probably working on some sort of special civil service award to present to you.

(1 post)Judge Hatch's true colors came out in the courtroom, not in her apology. She is biased and I fear for my town so long as she is on the bench. We have too few judges for one such as this.
Please sign and share the petition before Judge Hatch can oversee another sexual assault case. Anyone above the age of 18 can sign, not only local residents. Please help us!

Why this is important to me: Women who have been raped should not be shamed nor blamed for the man's choice to rape them. Rape is a violent assault by the perpetrator on the victim.
