Don't Look Now But Todd Akin Has Crept Back Into the Missouri Senate Race
Source: Slate
"We're going to be here through the November election, and we're going to be here to win." Those were the words of Republican Rep. Todd Akin late last month as he vowed to press on with his campaign to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri, despite being abandoned by pretty much his entire party after his "legitimate rape" comments dominated a week's worth of news cycles. Well, don't look now but Akin appears to have climbed his way back into the race despite the battering he's taken from both sides of the aisle. McCaskill enjoyed leads of nine and ten points in a pair of polls taken last month as Akin was being hit from all sides. But the two most recent polls show a different story, with Akin clawing his way back within one point of the Missouri Democrat in the (liberal-leaning) PPP survey and into a three-point lead in the (conservative-leaning) Wenzel Strategies poll. 5. McCaskill's the Problem
|
Claire Mccaskill only has herself to blame! This women is so afraid of showing that she's actually a Democrat, that no one really likes her! Even after the Todd Akin Mega Gaffe, she still refused to attend the DNC Convention! (Yeah, that's looking like a REALLY GOOD DECISION NOW, DON'T YOU THINK? She blew a golden opportunity!!!!!!!!!)
Paraphrasing President Harry Truman; When the voters have a choice of voting for a Democrat who acts like a Republican or a real Republican, they'll choose the Republican every time! |

10. People need to get off McCaskill's case
|
She's been a good Democrat, representing a Red State. She's voted for Obama's initiatives like a good trooper. She was losing BECAUSE of her voting record for Obama's agenda. She pretty much sacrificed a second term in doing so. I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with her tip toeing around the Democratic platform. MISSOURI IS RED, yet somehow she managed to snag a senate seat and has done good work in supporting President Obama. Now she's the only person standing between the Senate and this shit for brains Akin. Everyone needs to cut her some slack and appreciate what she's done. Even if she has to call Obama names in order to get re-elected, so be it. She's a Democrat at her core, and will continue to vote that way.

13. Call it the pragmatist in me, but this is exactly as I see it too. If you have to appear to be
|
"centrist" or even "center right" because you are running in a RED state, but can still manage to vote with your party when it counts, I can stomach that. Do what you HAVE to do to win in the belly of the beast (as long as that doesn't mean voting against your principles). NO problem with that, and I hope it leads to a winning strategy in November.

21. Agreed.

McCaskill deserves far more accolades than what she gets. Thankfully, Akin gave her a shot at holding onto that seat, so she has my best wishes in doing what she has to do to win.

I know what she's up against being a Dem in a red state. Take away St. Louis and KC and it's fundie central. In other words its no fucking picnic.

1) McCaskill is trying to run a campaign that pretends she and Obama are not in the same party.... 2) Obama has written off Missouri already and is NOT actively campaigning in the state because to do so would like holding rallies in Salt Lake City.... This is going to be a GOP pick-up even with Akin still digesting shoe and bits of foot all the way... |

A St. Louis CBS affiliate confirmed that KOMU-TV in Columbia has canceled Akin's scheduled ads until it receives full payment. 09/07/12 05:31 PM ET A source tracking ad buys indicated to The Hill that the station did end up receiving the full payment for the ad on Friday... If the station DID cancel the ad buy for nonpayment -- even temporarily -- then The Hill got it right. If Akin paid up at the last minute, that doesn't mitigate that the ad buy had been canceled, so the Hill still got it right! rockivity |

26. At this point the only reason I will vote for McCaskill is I despise Akin more.
|
Last edited Sat Sep 8, 2012, 08:05 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) McCaskill is everything I despise in politicians this cycle. She may have progressive sympathies but like a certain former Massachusetts Governor takes expedient positions to get elected. Romney may well have been a stealth conservative McCaskill may be slightly Progressive both stand for nothing but sound bites. I am not alone in my low opinion of McCaskill. A presence at the Democratic National Convention would have gone far in shoring up the Democratic Party in Missouri. It was not too much to ask. Every real Democrat I have spoken to feels the same way from moderate to liberal Democrats (I am up to speaking to about 30+ Democrats since June 2012). One Moderate Democrat last week told me all she is going to have left in her corner are those who hate Akin less than McCaskill or are somehow on her Senatorial payroll. For the first time in 42 years I strongly considered leaving the Democratic Senatorial candidate blank rather than cast a vote for McCaskill.
Given the state of her campaign I am not surprised at Akins' comeback. Claire is spineless. |
