MTV Changes VMA Start Time to Avoid Clashing With Obama's Speech
Source: Rolling Stone
Now there's a scheduling conflict: MTV has changed the start time of its annual Video Music Awards to an hour earlier than normal Thursday to avoid bumping up against President Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention, Entertainment Weekly reports. The VMAs will run from 8-10 p.m. Eastern time. Obama is scheduled to speak after 10 p.m. at the DNC in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he will accept the Democratic nomination for a second term as president. -snip- Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/mtv-changes-vma-start-time-to-avoid-clashing-with-obamas-speech-20120905 Good. In case any of you are wondering how much this matters -- last year's VMA had over 12 million viewers: http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-08-30/entertainment/30114115_1_lady-gaga-mtv-video-music-awards-mtv-video-music-awards

Last edited Wed Sep 5, 2012, 01:08 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) MTV's sister station BET (Black Entertainment Television) will show Obama's speech live as part of its coverage of the DNC. Didn't all the Viacom stations (Comedy Central, VH1, etc.) pre-empt regular programming during the MTV Movie Awards at one point?
And much of MTV's audience may vote for Obama anyway, but keep in mind that most of the people watching the VMAs may not follow politics closely. I don't know if "Rock the Vote" will take place in the VMA this year, but I know the 2004 VMA had a Rock the Vote segment featuring the children of both Bush and Kerry. |
