Paul Ryan: "Obama didn’t close the plant"...
Source: Politico
Rep. Paul Ryan said Tuesday that he wasn’t suggesting that President Barack Obama was responsible for the closure of an auto plant in Janesville, Wis., during his convention speech last week. “What they are trying to suggest is that I said Barack Obama was responsible for the plant shutdown in Janesville. That is not what I was saying; read the speech. What I was saying is the president ought to be held to account for his broken promises. After the plant was shut down, he said he would lead efforts to restore the plant. It’s still idle,” said Ryan on NBC’s “Today"... ...Ryan, who is from Janesville, said the president had promised to “retool the plant.” ... Asked on ABC to respond to Vice President Joe Biden’s line that Osama bin Laden is dead and GM is alive, Ryan responded, “General Motors isn’t alive in my hometown.” Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/80627.html

Transcript of Ryan's speech
President Barack Obama came to office during an economic crisis, as he has reminded us a time or two. Those were very tough days, and any fair measure of his record has to take that into account. My home state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory. A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: “I believe that if our government is there to support you … this plant will be here for another hundred years.” That’s what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight. Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/80423.html#ixzz25VoQUJ90 |

8. Who needs Charlie Rose? The Politico article creates a whole new lie:
The Wisconsin Republican stirred controversy last week over lines in his convention speech that appeared to criticize Obama for not keeping a Janesville auto plant running — whether Obama is to blame and the extent to which he could or should have affected the plant’s status remain a matter of debate. Whether Obama is to blame for a plant which closed before he became President? A matter of debate? Really? mikey_the_rat |

|
Last edited Tue Sep 4, 2012, 12:52 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) I mention this just as a matter of fact. The debate, of course, would be whether Republicans think a president should take the power away from a corporation to make business decisions, b/c that's what would have had to happen. Too bad Politico didn't expand upon what they were referring to. But Politico's words are "not keeping the plant running" (i.e., directing that funds go specifically to the Janesville plant to retool) which is different from blaming him for closing it.
(Edited for what I hope is more clarity.) |

|
Ryan should be working his GOP MOJO to get it working. He is the representative. What has he been doing to get that plant up and running?
It's his bailiwick. The president is the president of the entire US, not just of one district in Wisconsin. Seems to me that Ryan does not take responsibility for his charge. Ryan's meaning was very clear, and no one misunderstood it. And what is more, Ryan is a whiner, a not very mature whiner. In contrast, President Obama is mature. He can take responsibility, did and does. That is why people feel so safe with President Obama in charge. |

15. Quibbling. He put it out like a lie & then he can say "technically" it wasn't. He knew June 2008
|
Here's the letter with Ryan's June 2008 signature acknowledging the closing (pdf via house.gov)
Signed, June 3, 2008 http://paulryan.house.gov/uploadedfiles/ltr_gm_060308.pdf Technically, the Ryan line is that the President failed to "keep it open". Technically, the plant had a hundred workers paid after the main line closed Dec 23, 2008, to keep a small line open to fill out a truck order until April 2009. However, the basic fact that the weasel would have you not know is that the plant closing was accelerated by the Republican President who applauded GM for being "adaptable" in closing that and other plants. The plant was slated to close in 2010 (see letter below) but was accelerated and closed in 2008 except for an essentially inconsequential amount of work for a few months. Fact: It was all decided and finalized by time Obama took office.

Last edited Tue Sep 4, 2012, 10:47 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant.
According to CNN, Ryan's first version of the lie, told before the convention, incorrectly accused President Obama of promising to keep the plant open. He changed the lie slightly for the speech above. President Obama's actual quote was this: "I know that General Motors received some bad news yesterday, and I know how hard your governor has fought to keep jobs in this plant. But I also know how much progress you've made -- how many hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles you're churning out," Obama said. "And I believe that if our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition, that this plant will be here for another hundred years." So the quote itself was deliberately edited for effect. Ryan's ellipses conceal another important deception, because guess who deliberately worked every day to make sure that wouldn't happen, by delaying and opposing the President's agenda at every turn in Congress? Paul Ryan did. So Ryan did flat-out lie about it, but before the convention, then edited his speech to make it just as deceptive, but slightly less of a total fabrication. Congress disburses the funds for assistance and retooling; they have gone to great lengths to dry up virtually all of the President's discretionary spending, and so Congress, particularly the House, and particularly Paul Ryan, deserve entire credit for the plant remaining closed. |

45. GM is alive and made decision to close Janesville plant, because the plant made large vehicles that
|
were not selling, due to gas prices. The vehicles they managed to sell were sold at a loss; trucks and suv stayed on lots, dealerships were going under. They had to close some plants to save others and do retooling at other plants. GM seen the problem right away and had to decide right away to close the plants that weren't producing sales. The announcement came in June seven months before Obama became president and six months before Gm production stopped. Leaving an order for Isuzzu trucks to be filled by April 09.

Lyin' Ryan is a dangerous person. He doesn't even know when he's lying because he is so good at it.
He had known about the closure in June 2008. What did he do to help them? I'd like to see more interviews with people in Janesville who would be telling to tell the truth. But they're probably afraid since the Ryans are one of three families like the Mafia there. I guess I want to know WHEN will the lies finally catch up with Lyin' Ryan? Will it be in time? |
