'Jesus is a monkey' daubed on Jerusalem monastery wall
Source: NBC News
A Trappist monk stands between graffiti reading in Hebrew, "Jesus is a monkey" (L) and "mutual guarantee, Ramat Migron and Maoz Ester" (West Bank settlements) (R), which was sprayed on the wall of the Latrun Monastery between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on Tuesday after unknown people set the monastery's door ablaze. By NBC News' Alastair Jamieson and wire reports Hebrew graffiti, including the phrase "Jesus is a monkey," was daubed on the walls of a monastery near Jerusalem early Tuesday in what police suspect was a so-called 'Price Tag' attack by right-wing, pro-settler extremists, according to reports. Vandals torched the wooden door of the Latrun Monastery and spray-painted the graffiti on the holy site's stone walls, Israeli police said. "Police have opened a special investigation into the incident," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Israeli security officials had expressed concern about possible acts of retribution by a suspected settler vigilante campaign known as 'Price Tag' for Sunday's court-ordered eviction of 50 families from Migron, a settler site near the West Bank city of Ramallah. Police believe the incident was part of the campaign, the Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post reported. 49. I didn't say this particular incident was appoved by the Israeli Government directly
|
It is the Israeli Government that allows these hyper-racist "settlers" to move into Palestinian territory. It is the Israeli Government that hands out very light or no punishment at all for the "settlers" brutality against the Palestinians. It is the Israeli Government that has been ethnically cleansing the Palestinians for many decades and has set up an Apartheid Government.
The only reparations the Palestinians have received for this many decades of maltreatment are more bulldozers, bombs, bullets and blame. |

(Primates, really, some common monkey-ape-human ancestor is back there somewhere, but we are being sloppy anyway. You just paint over it and hope they will grow up. It is a juvenile's idea of how to incite violence. That's why people need to be grown-up about it, paint over it and hold dialogue with all potentially concerned.
Also, provide police surveillance at the monastery door if wished by the monastery. |

Monkeys have different skeletal structures, especially in the shoulders, and almost always have tails.
Jesus, if he existed at all, was a primate obviously. If you accept the rather banal and rationalized distinction between apes and hominids as that of mostly bipedal locomotion, then he wasn't even an ape, just an anthropoid. Apes and monkeys though should never be conflated. |

58. You have a good question.
|
Reuters uses 'daubed'.
NBC (OP) refers to 'wire reports' and they credit Reuters at the bottom. Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, and National Post (Canada), using Reuters, use 'daubed'. CNN uses the verb 'daub' -- Vandals daub anti-Christian graffiti on monastery in Israel IBT Times UK uses 'daubed' and 'scrawled': 'Jesus is a Monkey' Scrawled by Pro-Settler Extremists on Christian Monastery near Jerusalem Sky News UK uses 'spray painting' YNET Isael uses 'spray painted'. AFP in their own article uses 'scrawled' and 'sprayed'. The Australian, The National (Aus) and Lebanon News (all using AFP) use 'scrawled'. I conclude that since 'daub' is less serious than 'spray paint' or 'scrawled', Reuters used it to downplay the seriousness of the crime. AFP reported it normally. |
