CA Dem chair John Burton compares GOP to Nazi Goebbels for 'telling the big lie'

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Greetings from the California delegation breakfast at the DNC where before he had a cup of coffee Democratic Party Chair John Burton – much like his ol’ palGuv Jerry Brown once did – just compared the Republicans to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, for “telling the big lie,” a reference to several falsehoods GOP VP nominee Paul Ryan recently told.

“They lie and they don’t care if people think they lie… Joseph Goebbels – it’s the big lie, you keep repeating it,” Burton said Monday before the Blake Hotel breakfast. He said Ryan told “a bold-faced lie and he doesn’t care that it was a lie. That was Goebbels, the big lie.”

Reminded that Brown drew heat for comparing the messaging of Meg Whitman’s 2010 GOP gubernatorial campaign to Goebbels, he said sarcastically, “(Bleep) that’s right, she won the election!

... Burton is incensed by the distortions uttered by Ryan, who he referred to as a “horse’s ass.”

4. One problem

The GOP may scream fascism, socialism and totalitarianism but most couldn't define any of them and are lucky to know any of the leaders except for the big ones, Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini.

An accurate comparison is lost on them.

Goebbels? Who's that?

He called us a horses ass!

That they are very familiar with!

27. Welcome to DU! Maybe they just like rolling those 50-dollar words off their tongues all the time?

Perhaps they believe it makes 'em sound smarter. Could they do anything more than rattle off the few usual suspects and buzzwords? Probably not. That would require independent thinking without tip-sheets, talking points blast-faxes, and their own personal home TelePrompTer set - Pox Noise.

Unfortunately, the comparison is completely reasonable and accurate. How long has it been since we, just even here at DU, started noticing the "1984-speak" emanating from the other side of the aisle? How war really was peace. How giving more to the rich actually helped the poor. How economic enslavement was freedom. How foxes could skillfully, nobly, and selflessly guard hen-houses. How CONservatives were somehow compassionate. Now we're getting more versions of all that baloney plus restricting women's choices is actually helping them, and rolling back voting rights yields true liberty and justice for all.

Glad you're here, and it's good that you pointed it out, yet again. Sometimes those Nazi references actually do apply, they're not cheap tabloidy scare tactics or exaggeration for the sake of stirring up the base. Sometimes they're just plain freakin' TRUE.

8. Good!

GOOD!

Everyone always says one can't make Nazi analogies in American politics, but when the shoe fits.........
I have been a DU follower for a long time, but just started to post replies last week because I think I'm driving my lovely wife crazy with my constant political talk. You may have also noticed that I refer to Fox News as "Goebbelsvision" because I honestly believe that having something Fox News would have be the Nazi propaganda minister Joesph Goebbels', wildest dream. A way to spread lies, propaganda, and biased reporting to millions around the globe with the Orwellian touch of "fair and balanced." I wonder if the Nazis had had Fox News, could they have gotten Non-aryans to support Hitler's polices?

Think about. Seniors on fixed incomes believe Republicans want to "save" Medicare. Students with huge loans think a guy who made 100's of millions of outsourcing jobs will be the "job creator" by following the same failed polices of George W. Bush Blue collar, white union members can be made to support a guy like Scott Walker because he against those "corrupt unions" and their "outside influence."

It boggles the mind.

Fox News also helps makes what Thomas Frank called the French Revolution in reverse possible:

"Like a French Revolution in reverse-one in which the sansculottes pour down the streets demanding more power for the aristocracy-the backlash pushes the spectrum of the acceptable to the right, to the right, farther to the right. It may never bring prayer back to the schools, but it has rescued all manner of rightwing economic nostrums from history's dustbin. Having rolled back the landmark economic reforms of the sixties (the war on poverty) and those of the thirties (labor law, agricultural price supports, banking regulation), its leaders now turn their guns on the accomplishments of the earliest years of progressivism (Woodrow Wilson's estate tax; Theodore Roosevelt's antitrust measures). With a little more effort, the backlash may well repeal the entire twentieth century."

"For decades, Americans have experienced a populist uprising that only benefits the people it is supposed to be targeting.... The angry workers, mighty in their numbers, are marching irresistibly against the arrogant. They are shaking their fists at the sons of privilege. They are laughing at the dainty affectations of the Leawoof toffs. They are massing at the gates of Mission Hills, hoisting the black flag, and while the millionaires tremble in their mansions, they are bellowing out their terrifying demands. 'We are here,' they scream, 'to cut your taxes.

Thomas Frank

Welcome to DU...

The comparison between Dr Gobbles propaganda and the Fox news propaganda is rather scary, as they both lie and tell half truths, or outright lies all the time... I suspect if Dr Gobbles had been alive today - he would have been a very, very old man by now, he would have been proud about what the neo-conservatives, and the Fox news had made possible.. A 24/7 News Channel, who was spewing all form of lies to the populations... Dr Gobbles was already thinking in that way - already in 1937, after a successfully viewing of one of the first broadcasts on a closed set where black and white images had been shown on a TV set, Dr Gobbles should have told the audience, that he would like to have more of it - and right before WW2, the Nazi-regime had on paper, and on trial, to a couple of hundreds of "trustworthy party leaders" a form of TV, where you could se a movie - or be shown specially things, like a speech by Hitler himself and so one.. Then WW2 was coming around - and the whole concept, was more or less closed down, to the facts that regular Radio, and film reels could do the same job - and then, TVs was rather expensive, something it was up to the 1970s in most country's in Europe.. But as it was - the germans under Hitler, managed to use new ideas, colour films, and a lot of propaganda to make the germans - and many others to believe in Hitler and the Nazi supremacy over the rest of the world.. Dr Gobbles was a splendid propaganda minister, who used all the different tools, to make germany believe in Hitler and the goals set by him.. All up to V Day 1945, many germans did believed that some specially weapons should be able to win the war for germany.. Even when the russians was knocking on the gates of Berlin, many did believed they could win the war - thanks to the propaganda they have been given for the last 12 year... News about how bad things was on all fronts was never really told to the germans - even the catastrophic surrender at Stalingrad was put into a context where Hitler was the "superior" ones..

And the Nazis of the 1930s, also had some plans of using the new medium, to maybe put in public squares - so everyone could be able to look at speeches by Hitler and other big wigs at the nazi-system.. Even though who could not look at the speeches itself... A lot of different plans for the new medium have been discovered - but seldom been known by the public, specially as lot of it was more or less sketches and ideas, rather than plans for what could happened..

9. What else do you say about propaganda...

This is what they've been doing

Lies and distorted truths and misrepresentations
and the people who want to believe just suck it up.

This is not what an American does who has any honor or concience.

Would you marry someone who constantly lied - NO
Why do they want to have a lier lead their country

Gee - reminescent of the Bush/Chaney era, isn't it!

I've lost all respect for Repukes.

I don't even want to waste the time arguing with them anymore!
Let's get on with the election and get the Pres reelected and start moving forward!

14. Hell, main street (corporate) media said nada when the GOPpers were spouting

that about Dems especially during the 2010 elections huh. The present day GOPpers are using the same tactics that in fact were used by Hitler to the follow-up of WW2. The Nazis did target and singled out a particular religious group, blamed them for the economic woes of the country and basically turned the "patriotic citizens" against this group of people thereby, causing one of the MOST horrific genocide of a particular religious and unfairly targeted group of men, women and children to be experimented on, starved to death, killed, placed in concentration camps, et al.,

Guess what the GOPpers are targeting now, the minorities and seniors, blaming them in part for the economic woes. Welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI, Medicare, et al.,

16. Sometimes it's the only comparison that's accurate. Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda made a similar

comparison to Goebbels in their criticism of Rush Limbaugh a few months ago:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/10/opinion/fonda-morgan-steinem-limbaugh/

Conservatives have been comparing liberals to Goebbels for years, but they shriek like mad when liberals make the same comparison when talking about conservative lies.

And the reason they shriek so loud is that it's much more accurate when we point out what they're doing.

There really is no other concise way to explain the Romney campaign sticking with completely discredited charges like the one about welfare.

30. Indeed. Sometimes it's the only comparison that's accurate.

There honestly is NO other concise, or accurate, or truthful way to explain why romney and ryan and their entire campaign and SuperPAC pals relentlessly stick to talking points that have been repeatedly and publicly PROVEN to be false.

I mean, it's even gotten so bad that the "L" word (Lie) and its many versions are now, frequently being utterly openly, in the media, on camera, certainly online (where we've called 'em "liars" for years already). The words "Lie," "Liar," "Lying," and "Lies" are actually being used. How many times have you seen collections of those four terms used in columns and commentaries in major newspapers and on the air, on cable - EVERYWHERE people were talking about and analyzing paul ryan's CONvention speech?

I remember during the dubya years when lies flowed like tap water from that White House and Pentagon, and the BEST any newspaper or commentator or editorialist would dare try would be some wussy weasel wording like "the President prevaricates..." Or some other fancy-ass word that few people use in ordinary day-to-day conversation so that's the only way you can get away with saying bush LIED without pissing off a few hundred thousand CONs, especially the ones with the microphones. Besides, who knew what "prevaricates" means, anyway?

That was a HORRIBLE time. SHAMEFUL!!!!!! History won't be kind - and shouldn't. How fitting, then, that accurate historical references like Goebbels, be hauled out again now, to apply - correctly and QUITE fairly - to the lies of the GOP.

18. Remember that when Allen West compared Dems to Goebbels, House Republicans killed the Dem bill

condemning him for making that comparison.

http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/200583-house-dems-call-out-rep-wests-goebbels-comments

The House on Tuesday killed a Democratic resolution aimed at disapproving comments from Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) that Joseph Goebbels would be "proud of the Democrat Party because they have an incredible propaganda machine."

West's quote from this week prompted Democrats to put forward a resolution that outlines Goebbels's role as Reich minister of propaganda in Hitler's Germany for more than a decade, and says comparisons using Goebbels are inappropriate.

Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) sought to obtain privileged status for the resolution, which would have required its immediate consideration. After that was rejected, she raised it again, Republicans moved to lay the motion on the table.

That motion was approved in a 231-188 vote.

32. Bad Comparison

Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi Party during WW II were really Monsters who exterminated many European Citizens. Telling lies was just a small piece of how demented German Society on the whole became.

It is bad enough that our Country is Politically Divided but lets keep the German experience out of the conversation. But the History of this Inhuman Ugliness should never be forgotten. Way to many human beings were innocently slaughtered and that should never happen again. NEVER AGAIN.

35. Umm ... not a smart comparison.

To compare candidates with Nazis only opens up ridicule and makes more accurate accusations appear exaggerated.

Perhaps to bring up Goebbels quote as a philosophical point could be appropriate but there the comparison should stop.

No candidate anywhere supports true Nazi values (as far as we know) and it is damaging to make frivolous comparisons which are often lies in themselves.
