Romney staying out of public eye this week for debate prep

Last edited Sun Sep 2, 2012, 10:47 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

(CBS News) As the Democratic National Convention swings into full gear, new Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney plans to spend much of the week in private preparing for the fall's debates with President Obama, with no public appearances currently planned.

After spending Sunday and Monday at his summer home on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee, Romney will travel to Reading, Vt., for several practice sessions at the home of Kerry Healey, who served as his lieutenant governor in Massachusetts. Joining them will be Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, who was tapped recently by the Romney campaign to portray Obama in the mock sessions after the rave reviews he received for playing Obama during GOP nominee John McCain's debate prep in 2008.

Romney's campaign previously had said he would be making public appearances this week during the Democratic convention, but senior adviser Kevin Madden told reporters on Saturday that no public events are now on the schedule. However, he acknowledged that events could be added in the coming days.

While Romney will spend the week studying up, vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan will kick off his week a mere 250 miles from Charlotte with a trip to the eastern side of North Carolina, where campaign aides say he will ask voters, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"

1. Cram all you want Mittens, preparation can not make you likeable.

Even your own party can't stand you and any votes you get from any one other than the 1% are not pro-Romney - they are Anti-Obama. With help from your big money donors and a little election chicanery, you may just steal the election. But we all know, that you will never WIN this election.

in Rmoney's brain so he can answer the debate questions with the correct talking points and lies.

30. True, but this is completely normal

There are two reasons - one it was traditionally a courtesy to the other party and two, it is a time when you get far less coverage.

This year, Obama did not stay hidden, but went to various colleges. It is true that his coverage was less than it would have been in any other week, but he made personal contact with many college kids - especially in swing states. This could be critical in terms of getti9ng young activists involved.

to prepare his debate message.

Rmoney is in hiding ~ if anything he should be out there meeting with the LARGE crowds ( not) that can't wait to cheer for him and his StepfordAnnie wife.

5. P A N I C has now set in to the Romney campaign

You don't pull your candidate from the campaign trail unless you know you are in deep sh*t and that this is your absolute last chance to make the needle move, and there is nothing left in your arsenal.

They are in a full-throttle desperate, try-anything panic.

Couldn't happen to a nicer Party.

21. Oh, yes.

And Obama, I bet, will NOT pull himself off the campaign trail. Romney once more has conceded the battlefield.

The debates will be uncomfortable to watch.

22. betcha the folks that wanted Newt are going to be pissed at his performance

and wonder why their party didn't go with a debate-ready candidate...

Too little, too late, but it is probably going to get some of his pseudo-supporters so mad they'll give up on supporting the ticket. At some point, they'll realize he's been chasing a trophy job and not qualified to have earned it, and they'll be complicit in giving him his expensive gift to himself if they vote for him.

31. ALL the candidates due extensive practice

It is NOT knowing the answers as much as figuring out ahead of time the best way to answer them. Even the incumbents - even Clinton - did debate practice. For the challenger, even John Kerry, who as good at debating as anyone having been the best in the country during his years at Yale and considered a wonk on both the Finance and SFR committees, practiced before the debates.

By the way, Kerry wiped the floor with Gingrich in a real debate on climate change. Gingrich was the best in a weak cohort of candidates as far as debating was concerned. I have no doubt that Obama would have been able to deal with him.

8. His debate preper, Rob Portman, also played both Liberman and Al Gore

...During the 2000 presidential campaign, the staff for then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush asked him to play the part of Democratic vice presidential candidate Joseph I. Lieberman in mock debates that the Bush team had arranged for Richard B. Cheney, its desired running mate. Portman proved so formidable that, before the last of Bush’s three debates, he found himself in the dining room of the Texas governor’s mansion, playing Al Gore against Bush. He had prepared for the practice session by watching tapes of virtually every Gore debate he could find.

But the WA post article also notes:

... the view among several Romney insiders was that the chemistry between their leader and Portman “had not been great — not bad, he’s a nice guy, but just not great.”

9. My guess is

He's taking care of the Bain issue and taxes. He hopefully is going to have some "splainin" to do. Besides, I think Rmoney is not going to debate Obama. He'll say Obama is such a good speaker, and Obama, and the "liberal media" will twist Rmoney's words on stage, and then Obama will have more ammo to go after poor little Mittens. We shall see.

Let me tell you Romney. You have one outcome. You are going to lose. There simply isn't anyone who can win against Obama. No one. Period. Niet. Nada. He took on a room full of Republicans on once which almost no one remembers because it was in his first year. And he won.

33. Romney will memorize generic answers and just recite them

in response to questions. Hopefully, the questions will be a bit off center so that Romney's answers will seem non responsive. There is no way he will go into the debates unscripted. Improv is not Romney's strong suit.
