Paul Ryan Admits Marathon Time Claim Not TrueLast edited Sat Sep 1, 2012, 12:48 PM USA/ET - Edit history (3)

Paul Ryan admits that the Marathon Time Claim Untrue... The Huffington Post | By Alana Horowitz Posted: 09/01/2012 9:38 am Updated: 09/01/2012 10:08 am Paul Ryan's campaign walked back comments the VP nominee made about running a marathon. " I had a two hour and fifty-something marathon, Ryan said last week an interview. I hurt a disc in my back, so I don’t run marathons anymore " But the Ryan campaign confirmed to Runner's World that he has only run one marathon, the 1990 Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, which he finished in just over 4 hours. The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin—who ran Boston last year—reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three hour run. Ryan said in a prepared statement. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight " Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/01/paul-ryan-marathon-time_n_1848715.html

My best height was 11'6". I could never clear 12'
During the course of one season as the only varsity pole vaulter, I grabbed a first place, several seconds, and a third. I was mediocre at best. That was over 40 years ago. Funny? I never forgot my height. But it never dawned on me to lie about it. During those 40 years I guess I could have told folks I cleared 12' or 13' or maybe 15', but then I wasn't a Republican running for high office... |

11 was all I could do, and conditions had to be right. Had to be asphalt track (ours was dirt), had to be fiberglass pole (ours were metal), had to be a Cloud-9 (ours was a bunch of foam rubber stuffed into a nylon pouch with netting on the top). Well, the Cloud-9 was just a confidence thing. You didn't have to worry about hitting the side of the bag and bouncing off and getting hurt. My best vaults were when we played the rich schools: Rochester Adams, Bloomfield Andover.

61. Your story sounds very much like my experience...
|
-Cinder runway
-Foam rubber stuffed into a nylon pouch with netting on top until we got "Port-a-Pits." -Aluminum poles, until we "made the team," then we were expected to buy our own fiberglass poles. I remember one year we had a very wet early spring. The runway would get saturated and we'd have to wait a couple days for it to dry out. Then we work out for a few days before another heavy rain, then we'd wait for the runway to dry out, and so on... I worked out a lot in the weight room that spring. My best vaults occurred when we'd go to an invitational. Several high schools would meet at a junior college that had great pits and a tartan runway which always made it seem like we could run a little faster. As I said I was mediocre at best and went up against vaulters who were clearing 12'-13' consistently. But I had a great time! This was in the wake of Bob Seagren's 1968 gold-medal win in Mexico City. |

|
Everyone was very impressed that he could do the Fosbury Flop, quite successfully. Unfortunately, my parents couldn't afford a $300 fiberglass pole. The guys that had them didn't like to let anyone else use them. They knew they would get murdered if someone missed a spot and the thing slammed to the ground and broke.

Saturday is the slowest news day. Comparatively few (to other days) check news. And also, since Runner's World couldn't find Ryan listed anywhere, he knew he would have to eat it. People sign up for these events months in advance. Ryan honesty is going to be run through the wringer here. The entire exercize, running, swiming, and biking community will see this. good Cheating and lieing are an issue in sports. Aren't they? |

|
He must have thought his body was on steroids 20 years ago as well.
When I was Ryan's age I used to run a 10k at a 7 1/2 minute per mile pace with 1 run at a 7'20" pace. I always wanted to break 7 minutes but would not take the steps to lose the 20 pounds to make that happen. Thirty years later the times have climbed by exactly 3 minutes a mile and I am still happy with the results. Yes, I still need to lose that same 20 pounds. And I still feel no need to embellish the results as they are what they are. |
