Muppet stalwart Jerry Nelson dies at 78
Source: Variety
Puppeteer Jerry Nelson, famous for voicing numerous Muppet characters such as Count Von Count and Herry Monster from "Sesame Street," died in his Cape Cod, Mass. home Thursday. He was 78. A contributor to nearly every project produced by the late Muppet master Jim Henson, Nelson retired from puppetry in 2004, though he continued to voice several characters up until his death. Born in 1934 in Tulsa, Okla., Nelson joined Henson's cast of Muppeteers in 1965 and joined the cast of "Sesame Street" full-time in 1970 for the show's second season. He was known for his upbeat demeanor and dedication to the company, which Lisa Henson -- daughter of Jim Henson and current CEO of The Jim Henson Company -- touched on in a statement. Here's Robin's most memorable moment and here is Nelson as 'fire', along with the great Harry Belafonte, in maybe the finest segment ever broadcast on American television: |

13. i try not to think about it
|
but yes it does.
I was just about to graduate high school when Jim Henson died. I was about to start my adulthood, and my childhood idol dies. It was very weird. Seeing people I admire and respect in celebrity and in my own life get old and die... is not easy to see. 3 last year, one just this week. It sucks. My grandmother used to complain to me that the only thing about getting old that really bothered her was losing her friends. I'm beginning to see what she means. and I'm not even old. |

15. Such an iconic character...
|
my 2-yr old and 3-yr old grandchildren recognize my horrible impersonation of The Count and the 3 yr-old tells me I should stop and let The Count do it himself.... Three generations of fans right here.
