Republican Senate Nominee: Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant
Source: Talking Points Memo
Republican Senate Nominee: Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy. “First of all, from what I understand from doctors (pregnancy from rape) is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Akin said that even in the worst-case scenario — when the supposed natural protections against unwanted pregnancy fail — abortion should still not be a legal option for the rape victim. “Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work, or something,” Akin said. “I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.” Read more: http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/08/todd-akin-legitimate-rape.php?ref=fpa

Most of them are like this:
Mercy Garetz This guy is about to be eyeball deep in female fury. Have fun with that, bro'fo! THen two from this guy: Tony Robinson I think there is some scary truth to this man's point and yet there is some ignorance here. While the woman can discourage penile penetration with their bodies, it is something a woman had to completely focus on, using uncommon muscles. The scary part of this is how can a woman use these muscles when her focus is not necessarily go keep him out but to stay alive. Also, because the underlining act is natural, its really confusing when/ if a person have any kind of sexual stimulation from it. Unless you are completely in tune with your body and prepare yourself to be raped, the body itself is not the defense, but the mind, which is either strong or not. Like when children get molested, it leaves all sorts of confusions. Tony Robinson They say a woman's body kills off sperm naturally. She is focused on what she's doing with her partner. I think in a rape situation, she is more apt to become pregnant she's mentally am not one with her body. 5 minutes ago via mobile · Like. Hoohah: you are now faced, Missouri with a very public IQ test. Vote for him and seal the impression this asshat started or show us you have a three digit mentality. Honestly, you deserve him if he wins. name redacted because its mine: Tony Robinson, you have lost your mind. Truly, seek help. And I truly your next life is female. |

By saying that women don't get pregnant "if it is really rape" they are saying that any woman who becomes pregnant as the result of a rape wasn't really raped. They're saying that she's both a slut and a liar, in other words.

120. "legit"? Prob. Akins thinks it is not date rape, not spousal rape, & only violent stranger rape.
|
He probably means "legitimate" as in "a legitimate accusation of a bona fide crime with incontrovertible prima facie evidence that can't be overlooked resulting in an open-and-shut case probably with a guilty plea".
I think his hidden assumptions are that on a date "no" means "maybe" or "yes", and that by definition husbands can't rape wives because the wife will only make false accusations in a divorce case. That was his reasoning in debates about a spousal rape law (it seems he ended up voting for it after all). It seems he thinks that if a raped woman gets pregnant it is because there was some kind of attraction to the rapist and some kind of assent to the rape, making it a non-rape. Of course it is all bullshit, especially the bogus bit about doctors telling him stuff about rape and pregnancy. |

Pregnancies Resulting from Rape
In 2004-2005, 64,080 women were raped. According to medical reports, the incidence of pregnancy for one-time unprotected sexual intercourse is 5%. By applying the pregnancy rate to 64,080 women, RAINN estimates that there were 3,204 pregnancies as a result of rape during that period. http://www.rainn.org/get-information/statistics/sexual-assault-victims |

17. a classic case of "a little learning is a dang'rous thing":
|
what is true is that the odds of becoming pregnant from a single vaginal ejaculation (regardless of consent or violence involved) is actually rather low, as any couple having difficulty getting pregnant can attest. the statistics for birth control typically give the percentage likelihood of getting pregnant over the course of an ENTIRE YEAR.
so the chance of a rape leading to a pregnancy is indeed low, but it has ZERO to do with it being rape as opposed to consensual sex. there are no special defenses involved. |

on the flip side, it took mrs. unblock and i 4 years to get one kid!
as far as rape is concerned, the probability question is rather beside the point as far as public policy goes. it's possible, and more to the point it does happen. legislators have to address the situation whether it happens to 500 people a year or 500,000. |

44. So if its rape, and a baby is conceived, it is deemed an "illegitimate rape?"
|
Does that invalidate criminal charges? A form of witch trial evidence then, where if she becomes pregnant, then it was god's will, but if not then it is a crime. Maybe a child could be made legitimate by a retroactive marriage so it was never more than a husband's right to use his wife as god sees fit. Won't be long before, "why does a witch float?"
This crop of righties are amazingly retrograde in their thinking. It would appear that the dark ages are really always only one election away. You might believe there is a natural rational defense against ignorance as well, but clearly Mr. Akin provides evidence against such a theory. I guess if god had wanted him to think, he wouldn't have made him a republican. |

85. Update - Akin On ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comment: ‘I Misspoke’
|
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) said late Sunday that he "misspoke" when he claimed that women who are victims of "legitimate rape" have biological defenses that fend off a pregnancy and therefore do not need legal abortion rights. "In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year," Akin said in a statement. He promised rape victims "will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve" if he is elected. -snip- Copy of Akin's full released statement here: http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/akin-on-legitimate-rape-comment-i-misspoke Asshole !!! |

|
Like anyone disagrees that a rapist shouldn't be punished. False dilemma here: why can't you punish the rapist and abort his handiwork? Like punishment is even relevant to the problem being discussed. The gaffe about "legitimate rape" not only sounds bad, but it's a code word to Repubs that says he thinks women frequently lie about rape, and will lie more often to get an abortion. So, underneath there's an assumption that women are devious. Let's see if he gains more in the misogynist male vote than he loses in the pissed off female vote. I think he already had the former, though. This will send a few more votes to McCaskill, and possibly Obama. |

I told him I worked with a rape crisis center and this was BS. He was unconvinced. In his fantasy right wing world, any woman who says she became pregnant because of a rape is a liar. Even the thirteen year olds.
You can't argue with stupid like that. I can still see his smug little face, handing out this crap, spouting his BS. Sometimes this world is a very frightening place. |

Either that or Ryan goes away too overnight now. This just cost them the election, and now they have to try to salvage not getting totally flushed out of Congress too!
Remember, women vote too, and nearly one-fifth of women (18 percent) reported experiencing a completed or attempted rape at some time in their lives ((National Institute of Justice and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Prevalence, Incidence, and Consequences of Violence Against Women: Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey, November 1998) |

119. Akin’s claim is not uncommon in conservative circles
|
http://guardianlv.com/2012/08/rep-todd-akins-believes-rape-rarely-causes-pregnancy-on-what-planet/
Akin’s claim is one that pops up occasionally in social conservative circles. A federal judge nominated by President Bush in the early 2000s had said similar things, as have state lawmakers in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Politicians and activists who espouse this view often suggest that women who haven’t been raped will claim to have been raped in order to obtain an abortion. An Idaho state lawmaker apologized earlier this year after urging doctors to make sure women who claimed they had been raped were sure of that fact. Akin himself has suggested in the past that women may claim to be raped as a strategy during divorce proceedings. |

when and where did you graduate from medical school with your emphasis in gynecology?
and how would you know what "legitimate rape" does or doesn't do to the female body unless you had first hand experience in the matter? And don't be fooled---there are idiots in the state of Missouri who have daughters, wives, mothers, aunts and nieces who are draining their bank accounts even as we speak to donate to his campaign. it's stunning the base level of stupidity a grown man can have in 2012. |

132. NPR. Bless their little hearts.

NPR reported this this morning. They felt the need to state that there was at least one scientific study that would argue against what Akin claims. This reminded me of a line from Newsroom where the Bill Mcavoy character was railing against the "biased towards fairness." of the so called "left wing press" when it comes to reporting on the tin foil hatter wing of the republican party.
"..if Republicans introduced a bill saying the earth was flat, newspapers would lead the story by saying that both major parties could not agree on the shape of the earth." |

This story was the headline on Yahoo a few minutes ago. He is backing away from the statement saying that he "misspoke". Too bad, so sad, Akin. You just handed McCatskill the race. Their boneheaded, scary ideaology is so deep that they have no idea how their statements appear.

Is this nation really that divided? Either the Republicans have a very low opinion of the intelligence of their constituency, or they are honestly trying to throw the election. Undecided which way to go on this.

144. New Law (10 feet away)
|
Last edited Mon Aug 20, 2012, 05:01 PM USA/ET - Edit history (2) Just as law says "keep safe distance between vehicles" to avoid accidents.
Introduced a new law that other than family members & friends, people must stay 10 feet away from each other whether they are inside the house or outside or walking on the streets/roads |
