Obama says GOP would raise costs for seniors, cut taxes for wealthiestThis discussion thread was locked as off-topic by cyberswede (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). ROCHESTER, N.H. -- On the same day Republican vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan defended his Medicare plan in front of a crowd of senior citizens in Florida, President Barack Obama blasted the GOP ticket for proposing to raise costs for the elderly while slashing taxes for the wealthiest Americans. "Their plan makes seniors pay more so that they can give another tax cut to rich folks who don't need a tax cut," the president said of Republicans on Saturday in front of a crowd of more than 3,500 supporters here. * * * Obama blasted Republicans for wanting to turn Medicare into a voucher system. "Meanwhile Gov. Romney and Congressman Ryan want to give seniors a voucher to buy insurance on their own," the president said, citing an analysis that found the plan could cost seniors $6,400 extra each year. Yup, I guess the narrative will be that Americans are in a mad rush to end Medicare in favor of coupon care despite polls to the contrary. Indeed, while the media focuses on Ryan's exercise regiment, the American public will remain ignorant of the fact that Romney and Ryan not only supported the same cuts to Medicare that they are now attacking, but plan to cut far more in the future by ending the program.

And that is the magic number where MSM feels they need to step in and try to make this a horserace again -- hence NBC is saying Obama is "on the defensive regarding Medicare".
Question for NBC, have you fact checked what Romney is saying on Medicare? If Obama is on the defensive then that means you buy into the attacks. If you aren't buying into the attacks then you would be forced to say that Romney is on the defensive. That is how the game works. We know that David Gregory has given paid speeches to Republican groups so is this Gregory making this claim? |

3. Which party hates Medicare?

It isn't the Democrats. They came up with the plan in 1965, much to the chagrin of Republicans at the time. It's the GOP that has for years railed against "The Great Society", calling it an "entitlement" that the working class doesn't deserve and calling for "privatization" that allows people to invest in their waning years as their individual income permits.
Republicans are fibbing when they say they want to preserve Medicare for seniors. They want nothing of the sort. |
