Man in Ostrava planned terrorist attack - sympathizer of Anders BreivikLast edited Sat Aug 18, 2012, 02:40 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)
Source: Television News Nova (Czech Republic)
Translated from the original Czech language: A man from Ostrava, in whose apartment they found a significant amount of explosives and weapons, wanted to commit similar carnage as the Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik, who slaughtered nearly 70 people. The 29-year old man from Ostrava, where last Friday, police found a large quantity of ammunition, detectives has been accused of illegal possession of arms and being a general threat. An investigation shows that the man was going to carry out an attack similar to that done in Norway by Anders Breivik. Police found that the man was a sympathizer of Breivik, who carried out last July first a bomb attack in central Oslo and then gunned down nearly 70 people on the island of Utoeya. Investigations indicate that the man was planning on a similar attack. The unit in the block of flats in Ostrava were searched last Friday, along with another space and then the police searched the suspects car all night. "They found, among other things, ten boxes of so-called compacts that have a third and fourth hazard class, therefore a special permit is needed," said police spokesman Gabriel Holčáková. Police took guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, balaclavas and police clothing and a police badge. Then man had explosives which he wanted to detonate remotely. Also found in the apartment were air explosive bombs, which would cause a huge explosion. According to police, the man was going to attempt an attack, and had practiced with the guns in various places, both at home and in nature. He has four previous convictions for disorderly conduct such as obstruction. On Saturday, the courts should decide about his detention. Sadly the bad crazy is wending its way over here, it seems. A "sympathizer of Breivik", according to the Czech police. Here in Ostrava, there's no Muslims to speak of (maybe a dozen of us or so, and no mosques), so most likely his target was Romani, or the tiny handful of Africans that live here. On the TV News, they had some photos of the mini-arsenal he'd amassed.....sufficient to do quite a bit of damage. UPDATE: Here's a link to a story from the BBC website on this very topic; glad to see it's gaining coverage in the English-language media. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19304814

Well, one thing is good in this news - he got arrested before he could any damage... Breivik was never discovered, before he blew up the government offices and killed more than 80 people in all... And we still recoil from that experience - and will do it for a long time... Even though he will NEVER be a free man again... Diclotican |

4. No problem

for the translation. Sometimes because of the language barrier, stories like this never make the press in the USA or English-language media.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Ostrava, and for the most part have found it to be a very friendly and welcoming place. I'm very glad that this guy was caught.
