Rod Hoffman, Missouri Legislative Candidate, Saves Child's Life While Campaigning

A Missouri Democrat's unplanned stop at a house while campaigning led him to help save the life of a 2-year-old Wednesday afternoon.

Rod Hoffman, who is seeking a Saint Charles County seat in the state House of Representatives, said it was a "mistake" that led him to ring the doorbell of a house in O'Fallon, which was not on his list of "preferred voters." After he rang the bell, he heard a noise coming from inside.

"I thought I heard a scream," Hoffman told The Huffington Post Thursday afternoon. "I rang the bell again and I heard more screaming. I thought it was strange and an abuse case. A young lady came around screaming and asked me if I knew CPR. She said, 'we found our 2-year-old at the bottom of the pool'."

Hoffman knew CPR from his days as a teacher and administrator in the Fort Zumwald school system and ran to help. He saw the boy's father trying to administer CPR to the child, who was turning blue. Hoffman said the father dove into the pool to rescue the child after seeing him at the bottom.

"I took the kid inside the door; as we worked on him, his color started to improve and we kept working on him," said Hoffman, adding the child began to breath on his own after five minutes. "He started spitting up the water. After five minutes, I gave the father his son back."

2. Excellent memory.

I received CPR training as a teen and I don't believe I'd be able to remember how to resuscitate an adult, much less a fragile child.

Excellent work, Hoffman.

5. you'd be surprised what you remember.

I never took a course in first aid, but did see TV shows on the Heimlich maneuver.

When my son choked on a pizza crust and couldn't breathe, I knew we lived too far away for help to get here in time through 911. So I tried the Heimlich myself, and thank goodness it worked. The pizza crust flew out and hit the wall, and my son was fine.

3. Some Rethuglican is now looking for a toddler to throw into a pool...

so they can pull them out and save them. Maybe a bunch of Rethuglicans.

True psychopaths just can't help themselves.

4. Well, that's true. But a great story of a school teacher turned Democratic politican!

6. I wasn't disputing that, and he's probably just won the election (I hope).

But there's an old story I once read, used to diagnose psychopathy:

A young women goes to her mother's funeral. While there, she notices an attractive young man, but is too shy to talk to him.

Three months later, she murders her sister. Why?

Not being a psychopath, I had to read the answer: She was hoping he'd come to attend the sister's funeral and she'd get another chance. The story really stuck with me.

...and the kid would risk becoming a Republican.

15. That one was on the line.

Having a toddler and a pool is like using real candles on your Christmas tree. It can be done, but it only takes a moment for things to go in a bad direction.

10. What a wonderful story!

"I am so proud of my husband today," Shelley Hoffman, also a former educator, wrote Wednesday afternoon. "If this campaigning does nothing else, it put him in the right place at the right time to save a life. That is enough."

After seeing that his wife posted the above on his Facebook page, I REALLY like this guy!

19. Any second now...

... a puke will claim that by saving the child Hoffman was actually enslaving him.

20. In this case...

The politics don't matter.
Are YOU prepared to assist someone in such a situation?
Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Amazing!
You won't have a lot of opportunities to use CPR training but it sure comes in handy.
Also spell the person doing it if you are a bystander many hands make light work.

I hope the guy wins his seat. His motives are good, he wants to help people.
