Vancouver police officer filmed kicking arrested man
Source: CBC
Vancouver police have launched an investigation after one of their officers was caught on CBC video kicking a restrained and handcuffed suspect in the chest. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association says the officer's actions are borderline criminal, and shows that the Vancouver Police Department has not learned from other recent high-profile cases involving excessive force. "This is somebody who is handcuffed, virtually naked, sitting on the sidewalk, getting kicked. And that's not acceptable," said BCCLA spokesman David Eby. The police will subpoena the CBC and intimidate the network into discarding the video.

4. The Vancouver (and Victoria, for that matter) cops

can be major assholes; this isn't an isolated incident. We have them up here, too.

2. And if this were the US
|
Vancouver's Chief of Police would already have exonerated the cops in question and given them a promotion.

3. Is the CBC still a good news organization?
|
I remember back when the RCMP murdered Robert Dziekanski (about 5 years ago,) the CBC relentlessly hounded Alain Jolicoeur, president of the CBSA, for weeks until he relented and had a press conference. As would be normal in the US, he and his "handler" tried to dictate the terms of the questioning. Here's a video of that press conference:
http://www.cbc.ca/mrl3/8752/bc/ondemand/video/JOLICOEURqna.wmv This guy is a real piece of work and uses all the usual tactics to avoid answering anything. Then, after a mere 4 1/2 minutes, he declares that the press conference is over. Unlike the joke "press" in the US, the CBC reporters wouldn't have any of it. The shouting match begins at about 4:50. They do manage to get a total of 14 minutes out of this guy before he scurries away. Has Harper managed to destroy this outstanding news organization? |

5. “borderline criminal” WTF???
|
“borderline criminal” Are they nuts? What part of kicking a handcuffed man in the chest is NOT criminal? I will give the cops a lot of leeway in how they get the man in the cuffs. However; once he becomes your prisoner, it is your responsibility to protect him.
Remember the Navy SEAL who was Court-Martial for punching a POW? Anyone who has been in the military know you can get a medal for doing your damnedest to kill the bad guys, but the minute he is your prisoner, you have to protect him. IMO, it is pathetic that a cop can treat a citizen worst than a soldier can treat a enemy. Macoy |
