Richmond, Virginia (CNN) - Mitt Romney's campaign awkwardly backpedaled Saturday after the presumptive Republican presidential nominee waded into a contentious GOP primary fight in Virginia during his second campaign event alongside his new running mate Paul Ryan.

Speaking at a rally in Ashland, a picturesque town just north of Richmond, Romney described Virginia Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, who was in attendance, as "a great friend, and I hope the next governor of Virginia."

But to take sides in a high-profile Republican primary battle when the day's mission was to roll out the Ryan pick and unite the conservative base struck many observers as odd.

Romney and his aides tried to walk back the comments after the event.

Speaking to an overflow crowd after the Ashland rally, Romney talked about the need to elect a Republican governor in 2013 and said: "There are a couple of guys in the race, I love them both. I want to see one of those guys take his place."

Rollout Fail: Mitt Romney Disses Tea Party Star On Day Of Base-Focused VP Rollout

Mitt Romney giveth and he taketh away. On the day he fired up the conservative base by selecting Paul Ryan as his running mate, he also dissed one of the tea party’s favorite rising political stars and one of his recent surrogates.

At his second Virginia campaign stop of the day Saturday after debuting Ryan as his running mate, Romney appeared to weigh into the 2013 Virginia gubernatorial GOP primary which pits Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling against Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Bolling joined Romney on the trail, first in Norfolk where Ryan made his first speech of the day and then in Ashland, Va., where Romney and Ryan made another appearance.

1. This is your brain on Mitt.

...kinda like your "brain on drugs" (smashed egg in frying pan ad) but with Mittens' brain, this is the blah, blah, blah you get.

5. maybe that's it...I was gonna say

(and have said) he has the look of a sociopath. But, maybe it's alzheimer's. Oh well, no matter, has he released his taxes yet?

8. Me too.....

As a matter of fact, I've been thinking it for awhile now and verbalized it to friends this morning. He reminds me a lot of Ronald Reagan in his early stages of dementia/Alzheimers.

And, as much as I distrust the Repugnant Party, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case. What a great way to try to sneak one of their young guns into the oval office.

11. Yep, if R & R do get elected then

it would be possible to have Ryan run it until it is obvious Romney has this problem or it can be handled like Reagan's Alzheimers was....The public didn't know until after he left.

13. I think it's worse than that.

I think he just doesn't give a shit and really thinks the Presidency is beneath him, but it's a means to an end. He's not sick psychically, he just doesn't give a shit about anything but his world.

4. In 2008, the rnc had a Biden Gaffe watch website - the DNC needs to do one of those for Mitt.

Unfortunately for the gopers, Biden was pretty much on target during the campaign - with just a couple of oops now and then

BUT Romney seems to make a gaffe daily.

9. Ya gots to understand ...

Mittens likes to compete, and since his dancing horse may be putting his time at the glue factory, after his loss.

So Mitt is just competing with his handlers. This week he has to some fine diving to do, to compete with the remark about it's too bad the wife of steelworker didn't live in Mass.

He can't even keep track of who he's supposed to support.
