Two strong earthquakes have struck north-western Iran, leaving at least 87 people dead and 400 more injured, according to state TV.

The quakes struck near the city of Tabriz and the town of Ahar, but most of the casualties are thought to be in outlying villages.

Reports say phone lines to many villages have been cut off, making rescue efforts harder.

The US Geological Service measured the quakes at magnitude 6.4 and 6.3.

to jinx the earth in Iran.

On the other hand, could it be that one of Iran's own nuclear tests went awry.

Just joking. I live in LA. Earthquakes are a fact of life.

If aid is requested will the United Stated send help? I believe we would.

Would Israel? Isn't that an interesting conundrum. I believe their religion would require assisting but the politics make it a toxic issue.

Is this one where we would let China and Russia help without the West?

I like to remember that the people are not running the country.

The world tried to help New Orleans after Katrina but that son of a bitch Bush turned them back.

It is the nation's decision to accept help and who from.

But every rescue team goes on alert.

On edit: This, so far, is not that big a disaster. They probably don't need outside help if they have sufficient rescue teams.

I know the USA doesn't see eye-to-eye with Iran but we offer and they say no. It's OK. As long as that exchange is in the open and for all to see, then doesn't matter what rest of world thinks. We can't MAKE a country accept our humanitarian aid.

The US has spent millions in aid to countries that are not friendly to us. For example, food shipments to No. Korea.

Natural tragedies supersede political fights among governments. Although, I doubt that Iran would accept help from us or the Israelis.

Iran has many earthquakes and there tends to be a lot of damage because of the use of mud bricks for construction. My heart goes out to the people in those villages.

Two strong earthquakes killed 180 people and injured about 1,500 in northwest Iran where rescuers frantically combed the rubble of dozens of villages through the night into Sunday.

Thousands fled their homes and remained outdoors after Saturday's quakes, as at least 40 aftershocks hit the area.

Casualty figures could rise, Iranian officials said, as some of the injured were in a critical condition while other people were still trapped under the rubble and rescuers - hampered by the darkness - had yet to reach some affected villages.

Six villages had been destroyed and about 60 had sustained more than 50 percent damage, Iranian media said.

I hope they are able to save as many people as possible quickly. Time is crucial to getting people out of the rubble.

As an undergrad, I had a RA in my dorm who was from Iran. He was a really nice guy.

I have to wonder about these underground facilities though and how stable they are with the quakes. That may be a really nasty accident waiting to happen.
