Marvin Hamlisch, Composed 'The Way We Were,' Dies at 68

Source: The Wrap

Composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch, best known for the torch song "The Way We Were," died Monday. He was 68 years old.

Hamlisch collapsed after a brief illness, his family announced.

In a career that spanned over four decades, Hamlisch won virtually every major award: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, and three Golden Globes.

Hamlisch composed more than forty motion picture scores, including his Oscar-winning score and song for “The Way We Were,” and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s ragtime music for “The Sting,” for which he received a third Oscar

5. So young, RIP (plus unnoticed recent obits)

There have been so many celebrity deaths recently, and to the families and fans of each, sympathies are extended.

But here are two important people who have died in the past week or two who have gone unnoticed here. Just FYI:

The singular and brilliant film/video/digital artist Chris Marker:

The inimitable singer of Mexican ranchera Chavela Vargas:

6. Saw him in concert twice.

He had a wonderful rapport with the audience -- simply a joy, and a magnificent talent.

Safe passage, Mr. Hamlisch.

7. Had no idea he was so "young"

when he first made his mark. I always thought of him as an earlier generation than my own.

8. Aw man! So sad

I am totally shocked. Such a great talent. They Way We Were, The Sting, The Spy Who Loved Me, Ordinary People, Sophie's Choice, the list goes on and on...and lets not forget A Chorus Line....5th longest running show on Broadway ever. Man I remember taking going to see it on tour with my mother when I was a teen. Then when I was in New York when I was about 30 it was still running!

RIP Mr. Hamlisch.

9. Well, I guess he wasn't the antichrist after all

From an interview with Al Franken:
In another part of the book you argue that Jerry Falwell is “a nut” because, while he said the Anti-Christ is a living Jewish male, he has not yet fingered Marvin Hamlisch.

Well he actually said he didn’t know if it was Hamlisch or not.

So he was hedging?

Yeah, I thought you could rule out Hamlish. I thought a sane person could say Marvin Hamlisch is not the Anti-Christ. Why would the Anti-Christ write Chorus Line? Why would the Anti-Christ write The Way We Were?

Chorus Line, you might get an argument on.

Nah, I don’t think so.
