As Eagle Scouts return medals, gay ban still firm
Source: AP-Excite
By DAVID CRARY NEW YORK (AP) - For the physician in Illinois, the attorney in Kentucky, the arts editor in Oregon, their Eagle Scout medals were treasured reminders of youthful achievement. Yet each is parting with his medal out of dismay over the Boy Scouts' recently reaffirmed policy of excluding gays. "I can no longer maintain any connection to an organization which actively promotes such a bigoted and misguided policy," Dr. Robert Wise of Chicago wrote to Scout headquarters in Texas. "To that end, I am interested in removing all evidence that I was ever a Scout." Wise, 59, is among several dozen former Eagle Scouts who have taken such steps following the July 17 announcement that the Boy Scouts of America, after a confidential two-year review, were sticking with the divisive, long-standing policy of excluding openly gay youth and adults as members and leaders. Another of the protesters is attorney Jackson Cooper, 32, a former senior patrol leader of Troop 342 in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. In an open letter, he said he was unsure if any of his fellow Scouts were gay. FULL story at link. Read more: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20120805/DA0F83M81.html

3. I remember my troop gave the finger to the National Council
|
and told us they didn't care if anyone was gay nor did they care if you believed in God or not. Didn't stay long enough to get Eagle Scout but I'd probably be doing the same thing anyway.

5. Here's an idea. Scout troops leave the American organization.
|
Last edited Sun Aug 5, 2012, 04:54 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) And join the UK organisation instead.
I've never been associated with the Scouts, but AFAIK Robert Baden Powell meant Scouting to be for everyone, regardless of creed, color, or class. The Scout Association (as it is known in the UK, and open to both boys and girls) is welcoming to all, regardless of creed, colour, ability, class, race, gender, and sexual identity. Maybe if some Scout troops would leave the Boy Scouts of America and apply for membership of the Scout Association in the UK as an overseas member - that would be a solution? Or form a breakaway independent of the world movement - Baden-Powell Scouts of America perhaps? I know it is really a temporary solution and I am sure the American organization will come around soon. But for some soon is not soon enough. Edit. Baden-Powell Service Association of the USA does actually exist. For legal reasons they can't use "Scout" in their name but bpsa-us.org is their website. A Scouting organization that ironically came about as part of a schism much earlier on, and they *have* moved with the times to be inclusive to everyone. So Boy Scout troops who want to be inclusive, do so by disaffiliating with BSA and affiliating instead with BPSA. |

and they will be wearing white robes, pointed hats, burning crosses AND giving a nazi salute.
They're really turing into a hate group, THAT, has hidden perverts and child molesters. |

9. Here's the reason:
|
From the link:
The leadership of the Scouts' most influential religious partners - notably the Mormons, Roman Catholics and Southern Baptists - appears to support the policy. And even liberal politicians seem reluctant to press the issue amid a tense national election campaign. |

11. WHAT I DID WHEN THE BS CAME OUT AGAINST GAYS
|
Every year I gave a share of my pay to the United Fund, but I wrote that the $$ be not given at all to the Boy Scouts because of their bigoted actions against gays. I encouraged those around me to do the same. De-Fund the Haters. It's a start...

to just not give to the United Way. What do they do besides take a cut of the action and pressure employers to pressure their employees to give?

19. When there was some United Way controversy a good few years ago...
|
... my employer cut direct links with them. As employees at gift giving time we can still choose United Way but as long as it is a registered charity that isn't religious and doesn't promote hate... they will allow us to direct our donations to where-ever we choose, United Way or not. Give direct where possible. Personally I'd do it anonymously but the darned stupid tax code gets in the way.

Instead of focusing on gays maybe they should pay more attention to the actual threats? Like the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts have failed to protect children, all the while maintaining that we have to fear gay people. |
