Kirk Douglas donates $50 million to charity
Source: MSN
Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas has pledged a massive $50 million donation to charity. The "Spartacus" star and his wife, Anne, will give the money to five nonprofit organizations through their Douglas Foundation. A portion of the cash will go to improve the Harry's Haven Alzheimer's unit at the Motion Picture & Television Fund's retirement home and hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif., while part of the donation will help the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City. Anne's women's shelter in Los Angeles has also been named as a recipient, as well as Douglas' alma mater, St. Lawrence University in New York, which will receive funding to boost a scholarship program for minority students. In a statement, 95-year-old Douglas says, "Anne and I are of one mind in our philosophical approach to philanthropy. We believe caring is sharing." 1. If only every uber rich person would be so generous.
|
"In 2001, Independent Sector, a nonprofit organization focused on charitable giving, found that households earning less than $25,000 a year gave away an average of 4.2 percent of their incomes; those with earnings of more than $75,000 gave away 2.7 percent."
If only the rich were as generous as the poor. |

3. Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Kirk Douglas.

The women in the shelter will especially appreciate the help. I'm sure that the recipients of the services of the other charities will too, but somehow women's shelters need so much help. There is one near us.
Some of the children and their mothers walk by my house on the way home from school. It is not the Douglas' shelter as far as I know, but I am always happy to think about the fact that these abused and homeless women and children have a good place to live. Thanks. |

6. How incredible. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas

Maybe they can show others what can be done with wealth and that it is a waste to give it to political campaigns. It is sinful to spend so much money on politics when so many are starving, losing their homes, filing bankruptcy, etc.
What a fine example. |

I completely agree on the waste of money that is thrown toward candidates running for office (usually it is about furthering one's own selfish interests). So much good could be done with that money for so many people.
I am also impressed that he gave money to his (and my) alma mater when I have heard stories that he didn't get into a fraternity because he was Jewish. It shows he is a bigger person than such past pettiness. |

In fact it would really be nice to see some of the really wealthy ones cutting down the extravagance in their lives and doing more productive things with it.

9. That would be a wonderful ad campaign
|
targeting high-end consumers. "Do you really need that new blood diamond to add to your collection? (or luxury car/toy) You have enough of them, and for the cost of one more you could support XXXXX for six months." Split screen pictures of a sparkly ring or Beemer and a kid, or doggie, or a woman with a black eye.

25. Douglas helped break the Hollywood "Blacklist" via Spartacus.
|
Not only did he acquire the rights to the novel, which was written by blacklisted author Howard Fast, but he insisted that Dalton Trumbo, a blacklisted screenwriter, be given official credit for his screenplay. Up to that time, Trumbo had been using only pseudonyms and borrowed names. He wasn't even able to accept two Academy Awards as himself.
Douglas has always been a badass righteous dude. This doesn't surprise me. |

15. Kirk Douglas's favorite movie that he starred in
|
I once read somewhere about his favorite movie he made and it was "Lonely are the Brave". That cemented him in my "great"(fine person) actor category.
If one hasn't seen that movie- it's about a cowboy who is trying to be truly independent of "the powers that be" based on the book by Edward Abbey ("The Brave Cowboy"). Abbey also wrote "The Monkey Wrench Gang"- an environmental activist novel. Douglas undermined the McCarthyism blacklist of screenwriters by employing Dalton Trumbo. Kirk Douglas has always been at the forefront of activist causes. His generous donation is just an extension of his life- Kudos to him and Anne again! |

18. The plot was about a man who refused to be conscripted
|
Edward Abbey also expressed great antiwar skepticism in A Fool's Progress: "It's Churchill's War"
He was also critical of our ridiculous nuclear missile program in another one of his books. |

He risked his career and fortune to give Dalton Trumbo screen credit in Spartacus. Now he is using that fortune to help others. Here is a prime example of Liberal Hollywood that the whole country should be proud of!

24. My Kirk Douglas story
|
Thirty years ago, I lived in West Los Angeles, near a park with tennis courts. My neighbor, Rhonda, new to LA, went over to play at these courts with friends. Kirk Douglas was playing on the next court. Why he was at this little community courts I have no idea. Rhonda was star-struck by seeing him. Someone apparently got to Kirk, because as he finished playing and left he turned and looked at my neighbor and said in a loud voice "Hi, Rhonda!". She was dazzled.

29. applause for Kirk and Ann. Alzheimer's is a growing epidemic
|
and it takes a fortune for a family to provide care for a loved one, if you don't have a big family that's able/willing to do it all. Most people cannot quit their jobs to take care of an Alz. patiient, and there's no tax deduction if you do so. And much of the Alz. institutional care is a nightmare.
