On world stage, Romney showed smarts

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Tx4obama (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Editor's note: William J. Bennett, a CNN contributor, is the author of "The Book of Man: Readings on the Path to Manhood." He was U.S. secretary of education from 1985 to 1988 and director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President George H.W. Bush.

(CNN) -- For the past week, Mitt Romney brought his presidential campaign abroad to England, Israel and Poland, leaving his initial footprint on the foreign policy landscape. He may have ventured off path once or twice, but, to paraphrase J.R.R Tolkien, not all those who travel are lost. He blazed his own trail, one that will do him much good at home and abroad.
Before he even left for London, liberal commentators, on both sides of the Atlantic, jumped all over his alleged gaffe on Britain's readiness for the Olympics. Romney was asked a question by Brian Williams, which he answered like a technocrat, an expert, and one of the few men in the world who has run an Olympic Games.
As Dorothy Rabinowitz so wisely noted, "He did what a man who prizes his authority on a subject does -- he answered. He reflected on possibilities. It was a serious subject -- his subject." If he's to be blamed for anything, it's speaking too much like an expert and not a politician.

1. Sure Bill,

sure.

Romney is fortunate in that the whole world isn't voting in this election. Obama would win with at least 95%

8. 'Romney Has Already Disqualified Himself' Der Spiegel

http://www.spiegel.de/international/german-media-slams-mitt-romney-s-tour-abroad-a-847155.html

This is a really middle of the road to conservative german news out let

'Republican contender Mitt Romney heads to Poland on Monday, the last stop of an overseas tour
that has already taken him to England and Israel. So far, German newspapers have not been impressed
with his performance, citing embarrassing verbal blunders and superficial political posturing.'

In addition to raising money, the seven-day trip to visit important American allies was supposed to burnish presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney's foreign policy credentials. He started out last week in London where he met with Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of the Summer Olympics. Over the weekend he went on to Israel where he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

But so far, Romney's trip has not had the intended effect. In London he drew fire for clumsy gaffes. In an interview on US television Romney called preparations for the games "disconcerting," questioning the adequacy of security personnel and the possible strike by immigration and customs officials. "That obviously is not something which is encouraging," he said.

21. No offense, but reading many responses across many platforms, I have to say that many of these are

without merit.

Bennett has his baggage, but holds credentials with his following. He is giving them sound ammunition and the blather I just read here is just that, blather.

The opposition is desperate for some sense and Bennett is offering a rope they will grasp for. Churlish responses give him credulity.

Wise up DUers.

Last edited Thu Aug 2, 2012, 11:43 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

...Few vices have escaped Bennett's withering scorn. He has opined on everything from drinking to "homosexual unions" to "The Ricki Lake Show" to wife-swapping. There is one, however, that has largely escaped Bennett's wrath: gambling...

If Bennett hasn't spoken out more forcefully on an issue that would seem tailor-made for him, perhaps it's because he is himself a heavy gambler...(He) has made dozens of trips to casinos in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, where he is a "preferred customer" at several of them, and sources and documents provided to The Washington Monthly put his total losses at more than $8 million...

On July 12 of last year...Bennett lost $340,000 at Caesar's Boardwalk Regency in Atlantic City. And just three weeks ago...he lost more than $500,000 at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. "There's a term in the trade for this kind of gambler," says a casino source who has witnessed Bennett at the high-limit slots in the wee hours. "We call them losers."

When reminded of studies that link heavy gambling to divorce, bankruptcy, domestic abuse, and other family problems he has widely decried, Bennett compared the situation to alcohol. "I view it as drinking," Bennett says. "If you can't handle it, don't do it."

What a joke. Who really cares what Bennett thinks about anything?

Romney knows nothing about foreign policy other than the names of countries that keep your off-shore accounts tax-free.

This article is a waste of time.
