Mitt Romney to rekindle cold war spirit with speech in Poland attacking Russia
Source: Guardian
Mitt Romney is to round off his campaign to boost his presidential foreign policy credentials by returning to a cold war symbol of anti-Soviet triumph and western-backed liberty in Poland. > The speech on the "values of liberty" at Warsaw University on Tuesday is expected to seek to rekindle the flames of US cold war righteousness by featuring a strong attack on Russia and President Vladimir Putin's rollback of democratic gains, while also criticising the US president, Barack Obama, for allegedly sacrificing the interests and security of central European democracy in favour of realpolitik with the Kremlin. Romney has previously described Russia as America's "No 1 geopolitical foe", in contrast with Obama, who has sought to press "the reset button" in relations with Moscow. Mitt Romney just showed that under his administration he would never be able to assume that role for the United States.” Romney's campaign had said the candidate's travels would be a chance to "learn and listen," not a vehicle for major foreign policy proposals. The Soviet Union went out of business 21 years ago. "The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics abbreviated to USSR or the Soviet Union, was a constitutionally socialist state in Eurasia which existed between 1922 and 1991, ruled as a single-party state by the Communist Party with its capital as Moscow." Wow, I'll bet a majority of Americans want to go back to those days when focus of the adults on 'real' concerns made it impossible to understand the meaning of "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S."

My nightmare is starting to be mr Romney as the nest US president... Americans (or at least some of them, plus the Diabold "voting machines" are stupid enough to vote in Romney as the next president. Even with all the gaffers he manage to do... And many americans still believe USSR are still around, and kicking well... Even after 20 year since it kind of imploded on its own.... Diclotican |

To have Mitt Romney as the US president, would sure kill of any hope of sanity in the US.. He might not be liked by many Evangelicals and others who for many reasons would have trouble voting for a member of the LDS Church.. But I'm talking about his politic - and not least how he act.. If anything goes for what he have being shown in UK, in Israel or in Poland - he would be a nuclear disaster in the making as long as he is in office... GWB was a natural disaster in the making - Romney will be a nuclear disaster, with horrible consequences for the US, and the population.. A man who Long for the cold war is no man you want to get elected to the White House... Not as president or anything over the dog catcher job. I also believe that the world - and US would have great problems surviving another neo-conservative fanatical ideology.. Neo-conservatives is like a Cancer, who could make the life a living hell for they who got infected - but at least they can be stooped - but another round will kill you outright... As cancer can do.... But as you pointed out, US IS stupid enough to elect another of the same type as GWB as the next president - and then the fall from what US is today, would be a a long hard and long fall.. It is a nightmare, who still is possible to not get into - if you want to stop the nightmare... I for one, would have voted for Obama anytime if I have had the possibility of voting for the US presidency.. He might not be what we wanted - but he is far better than anything the republicans can try show for... The extreme conservative right - and the neo-cons hare more or less hi-jacked that party, and just a miracle can stop the GOP going down now... It might be a long death for the party, but the party will go the way of the dodo bird... Diclotican |

The cold war was horrible to live in, the first time around, even though I was born in 1976, and experienced just the end of the cold war, I do remember from young age who terrified some was, because of the nuclear weapons, who was pointed on more or less all over the world... But I do also remember when the cold war ended - in 1989-91, I do remember how the wall was being teared down, not by military might - but by common people who was not to stand for it anymore (of course it helped that the DDR government was in shambles and was not sure what to do at all) but the tearing down of the wall who had splitted both Germany and Europe in two - was being doing by people who was tired and was not supporting the government of DDR anymore.. It was the lack of legitimacy by the government, who in the summer and fall of 1989 ended the cold war - not armies and military might. And now this clown want to restart the cold war??:. How stupid isn't that... Russia are not even USAs worst "enemy"; I would say China (PRC) Is a far worse "enemy" of the US, than Russia is today.. Diclotican |

Ranging from Budennyi's campaign to the division of Poland with Hitler; to moving Poland West a hundred miles or so because the USSR wanted to gain territory after WWII and punish Germany (Poles from the east had to relocate--and we get pissed off at Israel!). Then the mess as part of the Comecon and Warsaw Pact.
Even after the breakup, Russia had a nasty habit of moving a lot of tanks right to the Russian/Polish border whenever Poland was doing something it didn't like, or announcing it was moving warheads near to Poland. Or couldn't be held responsible if the natural gas supplies were cut off in winter. Some things were just annoying. When I was there there was this outrage because Putin made a big deal of the German partisan movement during WWII and how brave and organized they were. And the French. And various others. Somehow, at the end you'd have to conclude that there was no Polish resistance and, in fact, the Soviet bordered on Germany. Putin wrote Poland out of WWII as an active participant. The only proper role Poland had was to be appreciative for the brave Russians that liberated them from the Germans and helped them for so many years. And when Poland objects, Russia insists that Poland's a danger, after all look at the Polish invasion during the Time of Troubles. Young Poles don't get it. Very old Poles miss the benefits they thought they'd have. Most others ... not a happy place. |

Last edited Thu Aug 2, 2012, 07:22 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) U.S. deflects missile defense criticism
WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A missile defense system deployed in Eastern European countries is the "most effective program" to combat the threat from Iran, the White House said. U.S. and Polish defense officials met last week in Warsaw to discuss the deployment of a missile defense system. U.S. Defense Department spokesman George Little said Washington welcomes Poland's support for European missile defense, noting Warsaw was the first country to establish a ballistic missile defense agreement with the United States. White House spokesman Jay Carney said missile defense in Poland was something U.S. President Barack Obama had "pursued aggressively." U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this year put new momentum behind the plan after it was scrapped in 2010.
