Sherman Hemsley Dead: 'The Jeffersons' Actor Dies At 74
Source: Huffington Post
Sherman Hemsley, known for his starring role on "The Jeffersons," has died at age 74. Although the cause of Hemsley's death is unclear, TMZ reports that the actor passed away at his El Paso, Texas, home. Hemsley made a name for himself as George Jefferson, carrying the iconic sitcom for a decade and earning a 1984 Emmy nomination for his work as lead actor in a comedy series. The actor went on to appear on a handful of other classic television shows including "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "The Hughleys." He also starred as Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series "Amen" for several years. Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/24/sherman-hemsley-dead-dies-the-jeffersons_n_1699590.html

Hemsley's scenes with Archie Bunker on the All In The Family show are comedy classics.
RIP to a very funny man. |

16. He could go toe to toe with Archie Bunker
|
And Archie couldn't handle it because George Jefferson was a conservative Republican too.

|
1:58 PM PT -- Sources tell us ... Hemsley was discovered by his nurse ... who initially believed the actor was asleep. Once she realized something was wrong, she called for help. http://www.tmz.com/2012/07/24/sherman-hemsley-dead-dies-the-jeffersons/ |

17. I discovered that show in 2009 when a local station played classic sitcoms in the afternoon.
|
That show was a great combo of Sherman's talent and Norman Lear's genius. Shocking to hear this news now. For some reason I never heard about Sherman's death on the latest NPR bulletin. I was born in the '90s but am grateful to have discovered "The Jeffersons", "Sanford and Son", and "All in the Family".

21. Try "Good Times" too.
|
It's about a black family struggling to survive the mean streets of the soith side of Chicago. They still show it on TVLand, I think. I still consider it the most provocative of the old sitcoms I grew up on.

25. Actually the supposed location was Cabrini Green -- a north side housing project
|
That is the skyline that they show in the opening sequence.
The show also featured a young Janet Jackson. |

Was was a stand-in for The Robert Taylor Homes. My bad. Still a fascinating look at a family surviving in the ghetto.

|
The first few seasons, anyway. It got kind of thin the longer it was on, as can happen to most shows.
Still, good ensemble cast, but Hemsley was the best thing about. RIP, Sherman, and thanks for all the many, many laughs you gave me. |
