Same-sex weddings boost NYC economy

Source: Crain's New York Business

Exactly one year after the enactment of the Marriage Equality Act in New York, same-sex marriages have generated an estimated $259 million in economic impact for the city, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced Tuesday.

At least 8,200 same-sex marriage licenses were issued in the last year, accounting for more than 10% of the 75,000 marriage licenses issued in New York City total during that time period.

"Marriage equality has made our city more open, inclusive and free," Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement. "And it has also helped to create jobs and support our economy."

According to the economic impact survey, which was conducted by NYC & Company and the city clerk's office, 67% of same-sex couples who married in the last year held their wedding receptions at homes, hotels or catering halls in the five boroughs. More than 201,000 guests traveled from outside of the city to attend the weddings, with more than 235,000 hotel room nights booked at an average daily room rate of $275.

It's cuts conservatives on the Constitutional rights issues and then chops them over "free enterprise" on the return slice.

Not the typical use of that particular terms, but I thought that it was apropos.
