1. Did he make it in shop class or something?

Most handguns are kinda meant to survive being dropped without going off, unless he's one of those dolts who dislikes safeties and reduced the trigger pull or something. Ugh.

Nice of him to try to flee the scene (and later the cops) as well, so he's probably at least four hundred percent dumbass.

(Also, for all practical purposes any handgun that isn't a revolver is semiautomatic.)

13. Just wondering,

If the defininition of a semi automatic is the ability to fire as rapidly as pulling the trigger, how is a revolver not a semi automatic?

And, does a revolver by definition, have to have a revolving cylinder of bullets to be called a revolver or has the term revolver become generic meaning any hand gun?

For example, is a Lugar of WWII vintage, a revolver...I don't think so and I'm not sure it would be called a pistol. What the hell is it?

30. Revolvers are pretty specific creaturse

The, well, revolving cylinder's fundamental to them, as opposed to a typical pistol where the barrel and firing chamber are basically one unit.

To oversimplify it a bit since there's different ways of going about it, with a semiautomatic firearm the mechanics of the firing process are what puts the next round in the chamber, itself ready to fire, without any human interaction aside from the previous trigger pull. Usually they use expanding gasses from the round being fired to push the mechanisms that reload the chamber, or the physical recoil of the weapon does the same thing, but there's different ways of going about it and I'm far from an expert in the details.

The Luger you're talking about would be a semiautomatic pistol (unless it's one of those bonkers machine-pistol versions which are rare to say the very least). The overwhelming majority of handguns out there are as well.

26. i would love that, but apparently the NRA wants anyone to have as many guns as they desire

and where ever they desire.

ability, intelligence, common sense are not a requirement.

we should just be happy that the bullet didn't hit an innocent bystander who should have been armed and ready to defend themselves. In the split second required to react, the man dropping the gun could have been shot in self-defence (walk away scott free in many states as a stand your ground defense). What could be scarier than somebody shooting at you? Also, how can you be sure he did this accidently, perhaps he was trick shooting. A lot to consider in a split second, so screw it, perhaps its better to shoot first to be on the safe side.

Just that the round hit something and sent bits flying. It could be a semiauto, a revolver, a rifle, or an arquebus and the same thing could have happened in that case.

when one of these assholes screws up like this-- at least take the guns and the license away and put him through military or police training, complete with rigorous testing, before letting him close to a gun again.

Or never let him get close to a gun again.

(Maybe that training isn't a bad idea for anyone with a carry license)

Interesting when I lived there 3 years. I was always blown away with signs going into a place of business, "check your gun at door". Made banking a great experience, um-hmmm...

108. Amazing, Isn't It?

I had no idea that such machinery never failed.

Gun owners have such total faith in the quality control of their weapons, that they cannot imagine
the possibility of a manufacturing defect.

While everything else we buy falls apart as soon as the warrantee runs out,
all guns are perfect.

Extended magazines and clips, not so much.

HPD: Woman shot in rear after man accidentally drops gun inside restaurant
A gun discharged and injured a woman after a man accidentally dropped it Thursday inside a northeast Houston restaurant, police said.

Brother accidentally shoots sister after dropping gun
HOUSTON—A woman died after her brother dropped a gun, causing it to accidentally discharge and shoot her in the head on Saturday, according to police. She was 24-years-old.
Around 5:30 p.m., the brother and sister were reportedly returning home at Kinsbury and Wayland and the man was carrying a semi-automatic handgun in a holster to take into the house.
He told police that the gun slipped, fell onto the concrete front porch and accidentally went off. A bullet struck Rochelle Jackson in the head. She died at the scene.

115. Easy answers.

Gun in purse: Fired because something in the purse moved into the trigger guard and pulled the trigger. No dropping is necessary.

Derringer: not a modern gun, not drop safe.

Jackson: not enough info to know what happened. Highly unlikely that the events happened as written by the reporter.

Double action is the only safe semi automatic for CWP ...only other would be one with a safety or use a revolver.
