Jon Kyl Berates Obama For Focus On Middle Class
Source: huffingtonpost
WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama should stop talking about the middle class because it turns people against rich Americans, who should be embraced as the Michael Jordans of the U.S. economy, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) said Monday. Declaring that the use of the phrase "middle class" is "misguided and wrong and even dangerous," Kyl argued in a Senate floor speech that Obama is "spreading economic resentment weakens American values" and ignoring "the uniquely meritocratic basis of our society." 25. The Analogy Kyl Used is Invalid
|
"When Michael Jordan came, after he established how great he would be, he was given an enormous, almost unheard of salary. Did the other players say, 'That's not fair?' No, actually all the other players got big salary increases, too," Kyl said.
This argument doesn't hold water at all, not in an environment where companies pay CEOs record salaries while they lay employees off and then offer to hire them back at lower wages (Circuit City), try to freeze employee pay while making record profits (Caterpillar), or banking millions of dollars while not hiring due to "uncertainty" (pick a company). |

I don't think they're really scared, but I DO believe they're getting "concerned". Class warfare for 30+ years was the exclusive purview of the wealthy. So much so that I stopped calling it class war and started calling it class massacre. Since last Fall that's changed a little. I still don't think most working class people know what it's going to take to really take back the country, but it's a start. And this is on Huffington Post, one of the more RW of the Democratic leaning web sites. The comments tell the tale here. Universal condemnation of Kyl's remarks. BTW, I personally want to send a big shout out to the Occupy movement. They've definitely changed the conversation around. Notice how few people are talking about the debt and austerity anymore? |

50. Sorry, but it isn't Obama but rather the greedy rich who have made the rest
|
of America dislike them.
The greedy rich are rich, rich, richer than they have ever been while the middle class is losing ground. Hasn't Kyl seen the charts? And then the greedy rich who make their fortunes in "free" international trade expect the middle class to take cuts in pay, have fewer choices as to jobs and STILL pay the taxes to keep our military going -- to protect the trade routes that the rich use to rob the rest of us. No way. Kyl hasn't figured things out yet. He needs to take a deep breath and look at what is happening to the middle class in the country. It isn't business as usual for most of us. We have good, middle-class friends who built up a business, employed lots of people and lost everything in the crash of 2008. They are just one example of prosperity lost, dreams lost, lives crushed by the greed of Wall Street. Kyl is out of touch. |

I preferred Joe Dumars, so spare me the analogy, John Kyl.

I was there the night The Microwave lit up the court with 22 points point in the 4th quarter against the Celtics in Game 4 of the 1985 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Ah, The Pistons glory days!

saying that. Also the only country where people would be stupid enough to elect someone who would say and believe that.

60. Ah, Jon, you beady-eyed asstrollop . . .
|
Jordan didn't pay the people coming to see his games; the people bought the merch, sold out the UC and made the people who signed Jordan's checks richer. Jordan was a product; a highly talented one, but still a product and one that was gained by luck of the draw (or an astronomically bad decision by Portland, whichever). The United Center would have still had a staff whether Jordan came to Chi-Town or not. The Bulls still would have had an organization whether Jordan came to town or not.
The CEOs only helped the other executives. Their wealth didn't trickle down to the masses. That was never their intent. There's no sense of noblesse oblige here. Their only intent was to get cheaper and cheaper highly-educated labor and pocket/bonus out the savings. Trickle Down is a FARCE. Always has been, always will be. Jon Kyl sucks at governing, sucks at humanity and SUPER sucks at analogies. |
