Mexico urges U.S. to review gun laws after Colorado shooting

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Felipe Calderon condemned U.S. gun laws as "mistaken" and urged Washington to review them after a shooter killed 12 people and injured more than 50 others at a U.S. movie theatre on Friday.

In comments posted on his Twitter account on Saturday, Calderon offered his condolences to the United States after a gunman went on the rampage with an assault rifle at a midnight premier of the new Batman film in Aurora, Colorado.

But Mexico's president, who has repeatedly called on Washington to tighten gun controls to stop weapons flowing from the United States into the hands of Mexican drug cartels, said U.S. weapons policy needed a rethink after the killings.

"Because of the Aurora, Colorado tragedy, the American Congress must review its mistaken legislation on guns. It's doing damage to us all," Calderon said.

1. Turn concern for gun violence inward, sir.

Mexico is a narco state with mass killings every week.

you don't get full auto weapons, grenade launchers, grenades from US gun stores, most of the cartel weapons come from south of the their border or they are either stolen or sold by their own military.

These are select fire , you can't just walk into a US gun store and buy them.

These didn't come from the US either.
Calderon needs to get his country in order first before he lectures us on our gun laws.

The myth that the majority of weapons come from US gun stores is pure bullshit, although those M4's and M16's do technically come from the US given to the Mexican police or military which are then either stolen or sold to the cartels.
My point is that you cannot just walk into a US gun store and buy a title 3 weapon, doesn't happen.

Haven't you ever noticed that guns are always priced in dollars on the black market?

24. Probably the US cartels have more freedom

Despite the evident disconnect--a "war" on drugs that increases the supply while lowering the price, in the best tradition of our reigning "free market" ideology--the American media regales the public with fairy tales of heroic "warriors" doing battle with murderous gangsters named "Joaquín," "Jorge" and "Amado."

The fact is, more likely than not, the real narcos taking the biggest cut from deep inside the reeking abattoir of the grisly trade have far less prosaic names like "Brett," "Ethan" or "Jason."

Mexico is also a sovereign nation and should, along with the rest of Latin America, stop listening to the United States about our asinine drug wars.

As an American citizen resident in Mexico one question I hear over and over is why Mexico's army is up on the border trying to stop drugs from entering the U.S.

The U.S. should clean up its own messes before dictating policy to other countries, which is about the only thing we excel at any more.

That said, Calderon is an idiot.

12. Do you folks live in a cave?

Do you guys not have a TV in your house? Everyone knows the reason US made guns went to Mexican Drug cartels was not because our gun laws are lax but because the BATF ran a special operation that required breaking dozens of state and Federal laws to illegally export guns to Mexico even against the objections of ATF agents involved some who later blew the whistle.

Months before Obama told Sara Brady that the Administation was working on gun control but it was under the radar. Obvioulsy what he meant was Operation Fast and Furious.

A federal Agent on the border was killed in a gun battle involving guns that were allowed to walk across the border.

Don't know about you guys but any Government that would do that kind of thing is not the Government you want to see disarm it's civilian population.

If you don't believe me google Operation fast and Furious and read some history on Government's killing their own people.

14. It's not obvious

he was talking about Fast and Furious. Do you have a link for that quote about it being "under the radar"? Even he did say that it doesn't necessarily mean it's connected.

Don't forget that F&F was the continuation of a Bush era operation that wasn't known about initially. I think it's just as likely that it was a neocon plot. In fact I remember several years ago that Glenn Beck predicted various apocalyptic things about gun violenece in Mexico. Maybe he had inside knowledge from a RW source...

Educate yourself.

"A Fortune investigation reveals that the ATF never intentionally allowed guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. How the world came to believe just the opposite is a tale of rivalry, murder, and political bloodlust."

Not only are you ignorant of the facts but you insult people here in your very first post.

They have the strictest gun laws in the world. Who here has heard of any gun related violence coming out of Mexico? They, alone, are proof of just how well gun bans work. Let's hear it for Mexico!
