(D-NE) Bob Kerrey: Let immigrants in military be citizens
Source: Omaha World Herald
By Robynn Tysver Democrat Bob Kerrey said any immigrant who serves in the American military should have a chance at citizenship. Kerrey told a Latino veterans group Thursday in Omaha that a guaranteed pathway to citizenship for men and women who serve the nation was the “American way of doing business.” Kerrey is running for the U.S. Senate against Republican Deb Fischer. A former Nebraska governor, Kerrey served 12 years in the Senate before stepping down in 2001. Kerrey spoke at a national gathering in Omaha of the American G.I. Forum, a group that advocates on behalf of Latino veterans and civil rights. FULL story at link. 1. Such a proposal would appear to be different from Executive Order # 13269 which provides an

expedited consideration of qualifications, http://www.justice.gov/eoir/vll/fedreg/presdocs/pd08jy02_txt-26.pdf , to a "guaranteed pathway to citizenship.

2. The US is far too militarized.
|
This reminds me of the Starship Troopers universe, where only people who serve in the military get citizenship. The result is society where the military-industrial complex IS the state.
We are closer than a lot of people think. |

Although in France three years' service in the Légion étrangère gives the right to apply for French citizenship.

6. "the Starship Troopers universe, where only people who serve in the military get citizenship."
|
Utterly untrue. Please re-read the book, that is not at all the case.
(If you got this meme from only seeing the rubbish movie of the same name, please read the original book. The only thing shared between the two is the title, the names of the characters and the idea of conflict with aliens.) |

will contribute to society, selling visas.
the military has had a hard time recently recruiting, and have been accepting people they should not have, with problematic backgrounds, etc. This is just an all around BAD idea. in so many ways. |

Really, you'll be quite welcome. |

then no question, they should be rewarded with citizenship.

16. How can you get into the military if you are not already a citizen?
|
I agree non citizens that serve should be able to have citizenship but I do not understand how they can get in to begin with.
