Trump says Republican border tax could boost US jobs

Source: Reuters

23 FEB 2017 AT 16:15 ET

President Donald Trump on Thursday spoke favorably about an export-boosting border adjustment tax proposal being pushed by Republicans in the U.S. Congress, but did not specifically endorse it.

Trump had previously sent mixed signals on the proposal at the heart of a Republican plan to overhaul the U.S. tax code for the first time in more than 30 years.

“It could lead to a lot more jobs in the United States,” Trump told Reuters in an interview, using his most positive language to date on the proposal.

Trump sent conflicting signals about his position on the border adjustability tax in separate media interviews in January, saying in one interview that it was “too complicated” and in another that it was still on the table.

hiking taxes for imports by 20% will cause so much damage to well, everyone. Small business owners will get screwed. Even Target and Walmart will have a hard time with Mexican products shooting up. For some reason when these taxes occur it's seems it is always more than the original amount of the tax.

He seems to just throw different numbers around without any sense of what they represent or what they mean.

According to the Wiki page, the symptoms of phencyclidine ("angel dust&quot abuse include:

rage
erythema (redness of the skin)
dilated pupils
delusions
amnesia
nystagmus (oscillation of the eyeball)
excitation
skin dryness

The mnemonic is RED DANES.

Not all the symptoms have to be present, so let's go through them:

Rage? Definitely.
Erythema? Probably. We know his crazy-looking doctor has reported Trump takes drugs to counter rosacea, which is also redness of the skin, and Trump wears a ton of makeup for some reason.
Dilated pupils? Hard to say; there aren't any pictures of this maniac online that show his eyes clearly enough.
Delusions? Most definitely.
Amnesia? It's actually pretty selective, but Trump can easily forget things like that he made a campaign promise that he'd work so hard he didn't have time for golf.
Nystagmus? As with dilation, it would be very hard to say; it's hard as hell to see his eyes.
Excitation? Of course.
Skin dryness? I need to see his forearms or calves to really tell; his face gets too much abuse from all the golfing and campaign rallies to be a reliable indicator of his overall health.

Five of eight: good enough for me.

Let's take one product. An Apple iPhone. If it were made here, it would be twice as expensive than in China. If #45 put import taxes up to the point that it is more economical to make the iPhone in the USA for the American consumer, then yes, that would entice Apple to build a USA plant for making iPhones. And more jobs. For 350 million people. That leaves about 6 billion odd people outside the USA where it is still useful for Apple to make the iPhones in China.

However... the cost for that iPhone for people in the USA will go up. That means less people will buy them.

The only way that border taxes makes sense is if the demand for that particular widget is going to be the same no matter what the price. But there's no truly inelastic demand/price product - look at the pharmaceutical industry and Epipens... they yanked up the price "because they could" and people tolerated it ... to a point.

A Republican border tax will only make make imported products more expensive and would probably lead to other countries levying similar taxes on US products.

This is a modern version of Lysenkoism.
