Romney, under pressure to release tax returns, turns fire on Obama

Source: Washington Post

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO — Mitt Romney, trying to fend off mounting pressure to release more of his tax returns, stepped up his offense against President Obama on Wednesday, turning Obama’s words against him to argue that the current occupant of the Oval Office is anti-entrepreneur.

For the second day in a row, the presumed Republican presidential nominee seized on a statement excerpted from a speech Obama made Friday in Virginia. At issue was the president’s quote: “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

The flap over Obama’s comment has been building for days, fueled by Republicans who say it betrays a mind-set hostile to business.

“It shows how out of touch he is with the character of America,” Romney told a rally here. “This idea of criticizing and attacking success, of demonizing those in all walks of life who have been successful, is something that is so foreign to us that we can’t understand it.”

Attacking success? REALLY? The Daily Kos caught these statements that Romney made during this town hall (and the Post skipped it):

I know that you recognize that a lot of people help you in a business. Perhaps the banks, the investors. There's no question your mom and dad. Your school teachers. The people that provide roads, the fire, and the police. A lot of people help.

AND:

There are a lot of people in government who help us and allow us to have an economy that works and allow entrepreneurs and business leaders of various kinds to start businesses and create jobs. We all recognize that. That's an important thing.

Guess what? The same right wingers who were howling and SCREAMING about a selective, out-of-context passage by Obama..."OBAMA IS AN ANTI CAPITALIST NAKED MARXIST"...are now all of a sudden SILENT about pretty much the SAME DAMN THING said by their OWN candidate. Obama's similar statement (with the bold usually the selective RW soundbite):

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Twice yesterday, Michael Savage played a clip of the first bolded passage TWICE without addressing the rest of the story. Today? I peeked at "The Savage Nation", and Savage opened Hour 1 actually speaking IN DEFENSE of government aid after watching the HBO documentary Hard Times: Lost on Long Island. He started Hour 2 with a story about shopping. But nothing about Romney's acknowledgment that government helps business. I also peeked at Savage's competitor Mark Levin, and Levin was rambling about how Obama was elitist and can't relate to most Americans because "most of us didn't go to prep school or attend a church with someone like Jeremiah Wright!"

1. obama got his singulars and plurals mixed up in his statement...

while referring to roads and bridges (plural), he referred to "them" as "that"(singular). then he mentioned business, also singular.

next time your kids whine about learning english grammar.....

2. LOL! Exactly. And those of us with minds know that.

Others, who want to believe Romney (actually Fox) won't bother to check the context. So we need to keep saying it.

6. But by that definition, it's Romney who is the elitest. It's Romney who went to a private school

and grew up in wealth and relative luxury. What kinds of idiots are these Republican talk show hosts.

How do they fool so many people?

7. And Obama attended prep high school albeit with less wealth.

He grew up without his father, unlike Romney whose dad was an auto executive and state governor. Obama went to Punahou on and his grandparents' money, unlike Romney's family able to afford prep school.

8. Obama's prep school was not nearly as elitest as Romney's.

And Obama's family was, as you point out, not as wealthy as Romney's.

Both of them were more fortunate than most of us, but Romney's family was far wealthier than Obama's. And Romney is far more an elitest than Obama.
