Former Trump adviser Roger Stone calls for investigation of alleged Russia links

Source: The Guardian

Roger Stone, a longtime adviser and confidant to Donald Trump who has been named in news reports as one of at least four individuals under FBI observation over alleged contacts with Russian intelligence, has called for an official inquiry into the swirling crisis.

Stone has called on the White House to order an immediate investigation through the Department of Justice over alleged improper links between members of the Trump inner circle and the Kremlin during the course of the 2016 presidential campaign. His request adds to a mounting chorus of demands from senior congressional members and outside advocacy groups for an official inquiry into the affair.

In an interview with the Guardian, Stone appealed to Trump, whom he has been close to for almost 40 years, to convene an inquiry through Jeff Sessions, the newly appointed US attorney general. “The president should tell his attorney general that either he finds proof of this, or he puts it to bed and announces none of it happened.”

Stone is the last one I'd have expected to flip out of the four possibilities (Paul Manafort, Carter Page, Mike Flynn and Roger Stone.) Since any real investigation of Trump will automatically include an investigation of him as well, perhaps he expect to avoid prosecution by rolling over on the Tangerine Shitgibbon.

I'd give a lot to know what inducements were in play to cause this little development. Stone is, after all, a major dirty trickster from the Nixon days. It's not likely that he'd grow a new conscience at this point in his life.

Either that, or the fix is in and he knows Jeff Sessions will "put it to bed."

2. He's not flipping. He wants Trump's pal Sessions to pretend to investigate

and then announce that everything's hunky dory.

16. That's what I thought, too

Otherwise, he would ask for an independent investigation.

3. Of course 'he knows Jeff Sessions will "put it to bed."'

Otherwise he wouldn't be making the rounds. He actually fortifies the Trump/Russia connection stories. His bacon is already being brought to room temperature, and the pan is already hot.

4. No they should appoint a special prosecutor with subpoena power to investigate Mr. Stone

He wants the Jeff Session's Department Of Justice to run interference. This matter needs a completely independent investigation. Someone who has no connections to Trump's administration.

5. Agree 100%

The legal landscape looks bleak with Sessions as AG. Who appoints special prosecutors in the US?

11. The most benign interpretation of Comey's actions during the Tampa gn (one I don't

believe, BTW) was that he was trying to protect his own reputation by getting ahead of an anti-HRC New York office FBI cabal.

The only way he could protect himself if Sessions does try a DOJ whitewash investigation would be to prevent the whitewash from succeeding.

7. They must have come up with a hurried game plan

to pursue while all sorts of things go on behind the scenes.

It is kabuki theater.

8. stone is a long know bullshit artist. he wants this "investigation" to be completely internal.

the very last thing he wants is a independent investigation.

this is him trying to appear noble and "get out ahead" of the story.

do. not. trust. this. bastard.

13. I saw Roger Stone

on Chris Hayes last night and wondered why he all of a sudden appeared in the public eye. Then during the interview, he plugged his new book.
