Queen Elizabeth II Marks A Record 65 Years On The Throne

Source: Associated Press

By ASSOCIATED PRESS Published FEBRUARY 6, 2017, 9:03 AM EST

LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II has become the first British monarch to reach the milestone of 65 years on the throne.

Monday's Sapphire Jubilee is being marked with cannon salutes in London's Green Park and at the Tower of London.

Buckingham Palace also released a photo of the queen by David Bailey to mark the occasion. In the picture, taken in 2014, the monarch wears a suite of sapphire jewelry given to her by her father as a wedding gift in 1947. The palace says the 90-year-old queen will spend the day quietly at her Sandringham estate in eastern England.

She became monarch on the death of her father, King George VI, from lung cancer at age 56 on Feb. 6, 1952. Elizabeth surpassed Queen Victoria as Britain's longest-serving monarch in 2015.

Perhaps between Victoria and Elizabeth, the strength and longevity of women leaders is proven?

I'm not very into all this royals stuff, but I must say that I've been watching The Young Victoria Sundays on PBS and just started the first few episodes of The Crown on Netflix this weekend. It's great diversion from the political horror show we are enduring in real life! Lots of pretty dresses and hunky fellas.

Pip, pip.

England's long living queens were Elizabeth II, 65 years, 0 days, so far; Victoria, 63 years, 216 days; Elizabeth I, 44 years, 127 days. On the other hand, don't run away with the idea. England's shortest reigning monarch was Lady Jane Gray, due to suddenly losing her head -- quite literally.

Also Mary II, 5 years, 381 days; Mary I, 5 years 121 days; Anne, 5 years, 53 days; Matilda, 208 days; and as mentioned before Jane, with only 9 days.

The next longest reign, by a male, is George III, but that was in the late 18th and early 19th centuries—and he, if we recall, he was quite mad. And the next longest-reigning males date from the 12th to the early 17th centuries.

In the modern era, the women (beheading of Queens now having become somewhat obsolete) are the winners.

Lady Jane Gray did not "reign," King Henry did. Etc.

That's like calling Michelle Obama the President.

although she was the puppet of her husband's family, it was her relation to Henry VIII (great niece) that was used.

William IV, who succeeded to the throne in 1830, was the oldest monarch to start his reign, at 64 years, 309 days.

The current Charles, Prince of Wales, is the oldest heir apparent at 68 years, 94 days.

Edit to Recursion: All Elizabeth might need to do is have Charles sequestered, to bring William into line as the heir appearant, but I don't know whether British royal succession rules allow for that.

... I'm glad the USA is not a monarchy.

Imagine a King Donald Trump? I bet if that's what the UK had, the public would be asking for his head.

The monarchy suits the UK just fine, sure people may win the gene pool and end up being King or Queen... But the real power in the UK is at Number 10 Downing Street, not Buck House.

Yes, I am a royalist - I can never be a Republican.
