Did Mitt Romney pay any federal taxes at all in 2009?

On the issue of Mitt Romney’s tax returns, my colleague George Will put it simply: “The cost of not releasing the returns are clear. Therefore, he must have calculated that there are higher costs in releasing them.”

The question is what could be in them that would be so damaging to the Romney campaign. Right now, the most popular theory is that Romney simply didn’t pay any federal taxes at all in 2009. As Joshua Green wrote, ” It’s possible that he suffered a large enough capital loss that, carried forward and coupled with his various offshore tax havens, he wound up paying no U.S. federal taxes at all in 2009.”

But the tax experts I’ve spoken to are skeptical. “Romney had a $4.8 million capital loss carryover coming into 2010,” says Edward Kleinbard, a professor of tax law at the University of Southern California. “So that means no capital gain income in 2009. If you look on the first page , though, he had lots of ordinary income (interest mostly), and dividends, which are taxed at the same rate as capital gains but which cannot be sheltered from tax by capital losses. So presumably he had some positive income tax in 2009.”

Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, agrees. “It’s unlikely that his taxable income was zero or even close enough to zero that his credits would zero out his tax liability completely,” he says.

3. uhhh....huh?

“Romney had a $4.8 million capital loss carryover coming into 2010..."

SO, Mr. Business Man had almost an 5 million dollar loss? What the hell! From what!?!

And what kind of idiot, with millions and millions, would have had such a loss in the first place? AND, if it was
because of poor money management by say a "trust", wouldn't you have fired their sorry butts? And let people know you got rid of them???

He's an "A-Typical" RePug/Bagger and cannot be trusted with money...his own or others money (as in MINE.)

6. What's 5 million dollars among the filthy rich?

Romney is worth $200,000,000. A $5,000,000 loss represents a 2.5% loss.

If you have $1000 in your account, it would be the same as you losing $25.

Sure, you'll notice it - but it's probably not going to hurt you that much.

9. Really?

The Dow Jones declined by almost 50% in 2008.

If you had capital you had a capital loss.

10. Like the IRS amnesty tax welfare program for all the "poor" US holders of illegal Swiss bank

accounts? Romney had Swiss bank accounts from 2003 to 2009.

They were closed in the middle of the amnesty that the IRS had declared for owners of previously unreported Swiss accounts. The amnesty terms said if tax evaders came clean, they wouldn't face criminal prosecution for not reporting it in previous years; which was illegal and most tax cheats weren't paying taxes on that stashed money.

Was this shutdown of Romney's secret tax haven Swiss account part of a US government amnesty program? Was the "I'm one of you, I'm middle class" Romney a government welfare tax cheat? Wouldn't that cause some redfaces if his tax returns had to be amended to account for those eight years of hidden money?

Yeah, all this amnesty bs was legal, but is this really the guy the GOP wants? The rest of us sure as hell don't.

until the tax amnesty legalized them?

14. I don't know if the activities that generated the need for Swiss accounts were illegal.

But it's curious that his were closed during the period the IRS gave rich people amnesty against criminal charges (tax evasion) if they'd bring their money to the US and pay up. That meant for the years his money was hidden there, returns would need to be amended.

Just saying this man, who wants to run this country, has some (moral) issues about paying taxes.

13. rMoney Should Fess Up

I'm ashamed of you, Mitt. You're the sorriest excuse for a presidential
candidate this country has ever seen. Release your taxes, if you've got
something to hide explain it, not the other way around.

Americans had enough Rule by Secrecy with the Bushes.

The President of the United States is a public servant - not a private one.
