Clinton's calls fall flat in Egypt political fight

CAIRO (AP) - The head of Egypt's military took a tough line Sunday on the Muslim Brotherhood, warning that he won't let the fundamentalist group dominate the country, only hours after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged him to work with Egypt's elected Islamist leaders.

Clinton's visit to Egypt underscored the difficulty Washington faces in trying to wield its influence amid the country's stormy post-Hosni Mubarak power struggles.

Islamist Mohammed Morsi, a longtime Brotherhood figure, was sworn two weeks ago as Egypt's first democratically elected president. Led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the military handed over power to him June 30 after ruling Egypt for 16 months. The military, however, dissolved the Brotherhood-led parliament and stripped Morsi of significant authorities in the days before his inauguration, while retaining overwhelming powers for itself, including legislative power and control of the writing of a new constitution.

The United States is in a difficult spot when it comes to dealing with post-Mubarak Egypt - eager to be seen as a champion of democracy and human rights after three decades of close ties with the ousted leader despite his abysmal record in advancing either.

1. Just suspend military aid and call it a US defense spending reduction

Everybody wins

3. I don't know what's going on with her..........

She seems to be on a "Roll" but with ideology that I never would have thought would come from her.

What's going on here? (BTW...I supported Obama over Hillary...but, never could have foreseen her "acting out" so much in her role as "SOS" where (as a lifelong Democrat)I don't recognize her international views as part of the party I've supported all these years.

I'm wondering if she's having some "personal issues" that coming out and clouding her opinions.

5. There is a sense I've gotten that somehow

she's controlled. Her speeches lack a sense of the "personal quality" and she's almost reading in a monotone from a prepackaged speech written for her.

I wish her well. I just think that whatever she's being told is offensive and it's like she's not a REAL person anymore.

Also, Bill is out there either pushing Obama in a direction or apologizing for pushing Obama in a direction.

I think it's odd that Bill is out there all the time on Obama's tail...when this was never a position that any Former Presidents ever chose to take.

I don't know.. all of it's disturbing..for our COUNTRY going forward. imho

10. Bill and Obama's relationship is professional.

Obama is not buddy-buddy with most people in DC, other than the Chicago crowd he brought along with him.

6. Her "ideology" does not come from her.

The SOS does not make her own foreign policy. She is a spokeswomen for the policy of the President and the White House. If you have a problem with her ideology then you have a problem with the ideology of the WH.

9. I think that you should direct your concerns to Obama.

The WH sets policy, the SOS enacts it.

Although, I get the feeling that Hillary can't wait for January to come so that she can leave the post.

8. I agree.

It just makes you wonder: why does she go there? Why make these personal appearances, getting pelted with tomatoes & shoes, and riling up the Egyptians.

You wonder, is she delusional.
