GOP senator slams Trump: John Lewis's 'talk' changed the world

Source: The Hill

A Senate Republican is blasting President-elect Donald Trump's criticism of Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), praising the lawmaker for his leadership in the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on Saturday seized on Trump's characterization of Lewis as "All talk, talk, talk - no action," pointing out that his "talk" made a significant contribution in the civil rights movement.

"John Lewis and his 'talk' have changed the world," Sasse tweeted.

<snip>

Trump's response sparked a flurry of denunciations by Democratic lawmakers. Sasse appears to be the only Republican publicly critical of the president-elect's attack so far.

was predictably attacking lewis, as they all will

the guy is an ignorant asshole but he is on a limbaugh radio station that reaches tens of thousands merely because it has the signal to do it.

starting monday unless they think it's a worthy fight to attack lewis the other talk radio gods will refer to him in their best 'non racist' derision.

almost half of the limbaugh stations that do that depend heavily on majority black university sports teams that broadcast sports on rw radio to help them attract advertisers - basically to pay for 24/7 republican propaganda

The very first thing on (taxpayer-funded) website is a screed against CFPB Director Richard Cordray, whom he refers to as "King Richard."

He and his fellow harlot Mike Lee demand that Trump "fire King Richard" because "underneath the CFPB's Orwellian acronym is an attack on the American idea that the people who write our laws are accountable to the American people."

I mean, how dare Obama think that anyone other than cartel lobbyists may write our laws. The nerve!

The only time they seem unafraid is when they are going against the general good of the citizenry like the ACA repeal or countless other issues. It seems they are so intimidated by their bully in chief that they will vote for or against things only when it is so decreed by trump or through his lackeys, Ryan and McConnell.

What's especially pathetic, are all these working/middle-class GOP voters - many of whom wouldn't have a pot to cook on had it not been for FDR, Medicare, the Clinton and Obama recoveries, etc. - who nevertheless are staunch Republicans because "someone's gotta put minorities in their place."

And we all pay the price along with them.

Unlike the other nitwits who backtracked and ended up re-endorsing after un-endorsing (Jason Chaffetz and Kelly Ayotte for two), Sasse stood his ground throughout.

That said, he is a wingnut loon, but really doesn't have much to lose on this one.

Jackie Robinson retired from baseball 50 years ago. Everyone in the country knows the name Jackie Robinson and many of us know the name Branch Rickey, the Dodger GM who hired him.

Robinson was attacked by his own teammates, by fans, and by opposing players who ran over him, beaned him, spiked him. Do you remember any of their names?

So -- I ask you -- 50 years from now, who will be remembered:
-- Donald Trump?
-- The Trump kids?
-- Melanoma Trump?
-- Mitch McConnell?
-- Paul Ryan?
-- Steve Bannon?
-- Kelleyanne Conway?
-- Barack Obama?
-- John Lewis?

it was someone on either Lawrence or Hayes - that Lewis genius was that his comment was deliberately setting up this sort of backlash. Predictable Dump would go after him, but that it would be akin to going after Gold Star family Khan.
