Dem rep says she's skipping Trump's inauguration

Source: The Hill

Democratic Rep. Katherine Clark (Mass.) plans to skip the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, the Boston Globe reports.

Clark, who was elected in 2013, said she believes attending the inauguration would "normalize" Trump's “bigoted, misogynist, anti-Semitic, and racist claims.”

Clark is breaking with the rest of the Massachusetts delegation, as all the other members from the state plan to attend the inauguration, the Globe notes.

“I support the peaceful transition of power, but I don’t feel that I need to attend the pageantry associated with and for this President,” she said.

Maybe some of our ex-presidents should take a lesson in courage

Just thinking of seeing them clapping and smiling make me want to puke

Such profiles in courage - there is a time for resistance and not good old boys and this is the time

I'd love to see Dem leadership decline to attend the inauguration. If they can't stay home, I'd like to see them at least not clap or smile. It doesn't matter what they say, it matters what they DO right now. I'm watching and paying attention. This isn't a game.

are you really from MT?

But as Robert Reich says:

Trump’s actions both during and since the 2016 presidential campaign mean that he should not be given legitimacy by having Democratic politicians attend his inauguration.

“The issue here is how former presidents and other politicians should respond to someone who has shown himself to be a dangerous demagogue....Donald Trump became president by lying, demeaning women, denigrating racial and ethnic minorities, denying intelligence reports of foreign intervention in our election, excusing violence against opponents, and undermining the freedom and independence of the press.....Trump has shown no contrition, and has instead “continued to tell big lies, retaliate against critics, call opponents “enemies,” avoid press conferences, and dismiss conflicts of financial interest.”

In sum, Reich believes that attending Trump’s inauguration “gives tacit support and approval to someone who poses a clear and present danger to our democracy.”

Reich is spot on. Do not legitimize this ruinous situation.

attendance at the orange idiot's pageantry is legitimizing an illegitimate presidency. The Clintons should not be attending. They also need to be considering the fact that the MSM will be vilifying them and mocking them because of what happened with the election.

There shouldn't be ANY Dems there.

I was disappointed to hear that Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter were attending. That's a shame. Also disappointed that the Clintons will be there. I suppose perhaps it's a decision Hillary made to show some sort of good sportsmanship or something. I think she has every right to skip the damn thing - and the same for Bill, too.

If I were in Congress, I'd skip it, too. LOTS better things to do with my time than salute the coronation of the sexual predator/king of conflict of interest/Manchurian candidate and Putin puppet. By attending, you are giving de facto approval and validation of it. I wouldn't be able to face myself in the mirror in the morning if I attended.

That time can be much better spent working on ways to defeat his agenda and invalidate his ill-gotten gain.

the orange man should not be given the graces of actually holding the office of PROTUS. It is revolting.

Attendance at Trumpf's inauguration by any Democratic office holder, past or present, is totally inexcusable. These are dangerous times and not the time for business as usual.

How many times have we heard that word with regard to the Trump transition? I think the democrats should show Trump what unprecedented is and none of them, candidates, past presidents, etc. should be anywhere near D.C. on Inauguration Day.

I have to say, I am really disappointed in the lot of them that have decided to attend citing "respect" for the office. The man does not know the meaning of the word. He has diminished the office and our democracy. I think they are cowards for giving in.

Even though that strategy has not worked for decades now. That smiling and pretending everything, including the other side's behaviour, is perfectly normal. All in hopes that the other side will in fact start to behave normally, and start to act like adults. The Dems are deathly frightened that it will be THEM that will be painted as radicals and abnormal for daring to rock the boat. That's not their style.
