President-elect Donald Trump met at his Florida resort on Wednesday with leaders of top U.S. nonprofit hospital systems to discuss overhauling health care for veterans, including by allowing them to more readily visit hospitals outside the Veterans Affairs system.
The group weighed public-private partnerships and other options that would make it possible for veterans to go to any hospital for care, inside the VA system or outside of it, a senior transition official said after the meeting. Some veterans advocacy groups have cautioned against expanding access to care outside the government-run hospitals under the Veterans Health Administration, fearing the system may be weakened by privatization.
The VA system spends about $70 billion a year on medical care, offering a potential windfall to private hospitals if more veterans are allowed into their beds.
Perlmutter has been friends with Trump for years, and his wife, Laura, sits on the president-elects inauguration-planning committee. They divide their time between homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida, much like Trump, and spent Thanksgiving with him at Mar-a-Lago.

They'll starve the VA of patients, and claim it's disorganized, a failure, etc, and end it. Same strategy as the public school "reform." Write tests no child can pass, underfund the schools, claim they're "a disaster" and take them over, making schools privately held so that share holders can put your school tax $$ right into their own pockets.
Same GOP playbook, every time. And yet, we don't ever catch on.

(825 posts)Use the civilian healthcare system and have the government pay for it... bacicslly just giving vets a single payer system what would be wrong with that?
I'm no expert on this issue ...

(20,679 posts)Making the VA "compete" with private care would weaken it: The care would be reduced to a business "profit" model. They'd refuse expensive patients, eliminate difficult conditions, in order to remain competitive.
Basically, it would slowly erode the system, requiring firings and hospital closings: All things that would eliminate the system over time.
Because the GOP is only "pro-life" or "pro-war" until they have to spend money taking care of babies and veterans. Then, it's "You're on your own."

(5,268 posts)Bill was already passed and signed by Pres. Obama to allow VA funding for Vets to use non-VA facilities.
they want to eliminate the the 50 mile barrier that currently exists. Since the VA has been overwhelmed by returning vets the vets can go to facilities outside the VA system if they live 50 miles from a VA facility.

(5,049 posts)But the real problem is a chickenhawk Republican Party that keeps us on a constant war footing engaging in Middle East conflicts for Exon/Mobile.
Stop the wars and we stop creating tens of thousands of Veterans with medical difficulties.
