I just wish that I had not voted. Trump voter lost her home to his new Treasury secretary
Source: Associated Press
Fri., Dec. 2, 2016
WASHINGTONWhen Donald Trump named his Treasury secretary, Teena Colebrook felt her heart sink.
She had voted for the president-elect on the belief that he would knock the moneyed elites from their perch in Washington, D.C. And she knew Trumps pick for Treasury Steven Mnuchin all too well.
OneWest, a bank formerly owned by a group of investors headed by Mnuchin, had foreclosed on her Los Angeles-area home in the aftermath of the Great Recession, stripping her of the two units she rented as a primary source of income.
<<snip>>
Less than a month after his presidential win, Trumps populist appeal has started to clash with a Cabinet of billionaires and millionaires that he believes can energize economic growth.

(2,640 posts)It's sad, I know.
But through the whole campaign I kept saying: He acts like he's for the common man, but he IS "the man"

(19,756 posts)...IMHO, he represented them because he is part of the white majority and they wanted someone to be president that wanted to "Make America Great Again" by subjugating Black/Brown folks, immigrants, Muslims, the handicap, women, LGBT, etc to white men

(10,857 posts)... The way that low-empathy people learn the error of their ways is by taking direct personal hits for their actions. EVERYONE who voted for Trump is someone who doesn't let the pain of others distract them from what they personally want. They all need the lessons they sleep through in church.
We'll be seeing hundreds of the "now I understand" stories when their Social Security is pushed into the markets and then short-sold and stolen, when they can't afford gas to get to their shitty jobs, when their Medicare is stolen and their insurance companies drop them, when their children ship off to war in countries they never knew existed, when the terrorists magically return to US soil, when they're forced to take pay cuts, wage-freezes and layoffs.
There's a part of me that wants to say, "fuck 'em," and another part of me that says, "this is tragic." But there is still another part of me that says, "this is how you teach Nazis not to be Nazis." By letting their own choices raze their lives around them.

(12,581 posts)However, if you even participated in culture warrior battles to help convince any your red state FB and Twitter family and friends to vote for Trump because, oh, "he was a good christian going to help the working guy and them unborn babies", or pushed the "Crooked Hillary" lie - totally ignoring Trump's history that was out there in the open for anyone could find with a little bit of effort, or cheerlead or followed the KKK and other White Nationalists prancing around blowing their racist dog-whistles, then maybe you should feel just a "teensy" bit guilty.
But don't worry your empty little head about your predicament. You'll be much better off than your friends and families in states that won't protect their safety nets...

(19,429 posts)She rented out two of the units and lived in the third. Colebrook refinanced her mortgage in order to renovate the property and help buy additional homes to generate rental income.
By the time the financial crisis struck in 2008, she had an interest-only mortgage on the triplex known as a pick-a-payment loan. Her monthly payments ran as high as $2,000 and only covered the interest on the debt. Then she got ensnarled in the economic downturn.
All my tenants lost their jobs in the crash, Colebrook said. They couldnt pay. It was a knock-on effect.
So these are not first mortgages for money purchase of the borrower's home. She was trying to get rich quick in real estate by leveraging up a series of purchases.

(27,758 posts)I don't know the details of her foreclosure battle, but it does sound as if she was into speculation, albeit in a very small way. And I think this is typical of a certain type of Trump voter.

(2,902 posts)That was predatory of the bank.
FarCenter
(19,429 posts)In states like California, the real estate is the only security for the mortgage. The bank cannot garnishee the lenders wages or sue the borrower for the amount of the loan.

Why?
Really, this doesn't take a lot of information. Basic common sense.

(90,740 posts)She didn't bother thinking beyond that happy feeling.
But we're scolded for having contempt for those who'd rather feel good about it all than actually research the facts themselves.
Maybe now she'll bother to see the obvious instead of merely being enthralled by the words.
I doubt it, but maybe.

(5,914 posts)I feel sorry for people who honestly weren't aware that they were supporting the most successful con artist in American history. Maybe they don't have access to the Internet or education above a sixth grade level, and so they didn't receive or understand the warnings that were provided to them every single day from every source of information out there.
But I have no sympathy for those that know better but discount the truth or choose not to believe it. The truth is dangling in their face, but they reject it anyway, because it conflicts with their own prejudices.

I doubt anyone was going to change what happened to her home/rental properties/interest only payments. Easy money makes people do dumb things. Whether that's people at the banks, or individual people looking to make a quick buck.
Want a house? Buy a house. Buy a triplex, rent it out, and buy more homes? Should probably have money other than the rental income to sustain that.
