6 injured in Pamplona's Running of the Bulls

Source: CBS/AP

July 7, 2012 7:30 AM

(CBS/AP) PAMPLONA, Spain - Thousands took to the narrow city streets of the northern Spanish city of Pamplona, daring to outrun half-ton charging animals with sharp horns. Not all escaped unscathed.

The first running of the bulls of this year's San Fermin festival was held Saturday. It is a Spanish tradition dating to the 14th century.

One elderly thrill-seeker was gored in a leg and five others slightly injured as adrenaline-charged runners, in traditional white clothing and red kerchiefs around their necks, tripped over each other or fell in the mad daredevil annual rush along early morning dew-moistened slippery streets to the city's bull ring.

They deserve to get gored, stomped, or whatever. It's kind of like living next to the Mississippi River and when it floods complaining that you are wet.

You engage in risky behavior, whatever it is, I guess people are saying you're responsible for any downside to the risks.

I guess I could argue, but there's iced tea waiting.

The other five were injured by the other runners. Which species is the more dangerous here? Perhaps the event ought to be renamed the Running of the Dangerous Idiots.

I haven't eaten meat for over 13 years. For animal rights' reasons.

These are not bullfights (at least not at the point of the running), the bulls usually win, and I'm a historian of Latin America and, by extension, of Spain (I'm also Spanish, as recently discovered through genealogical research). I'm a cultural historian, and culture- no matter how abhorrent Americans might find it- interests me. I generally try not to judge other cultures' peculiarities (my main area of focus is indigenous peoples of Mexico, in which I commonly deal with the spectre of human sacrifice). I'm pretty good at compartmentalizing things.

Don't want to rain on the annual wonderfulness of something so far outside the boundaries of my world that I can't pretend I "get it," but the single easiest way in the world to not get injured by a bull is to not fuck with a bull.

It's true.

I looked it up.

torture the bulls? They are trying to avoid them. I will agree that how the bulls are dealt with after the run is barbaric.

I will check it when I get home. I saw the video, though. I wasn't aware of the taunting once they enter the ring. The people looked like a bunch of hyenas harassing an old lion. Not cool.

nicely dressed people and really beautiful. The town is serene and charming. The local bar (in a graceful old hotel on the town square) has a statue of Hemingway actually standing at the bar! It was quite a sight! It seems that Hemingway wrote "Death in the Afternoon" there.
