Republican firebrand Darrell Issa in surprisingly tight race with Applegate

Source: KPCC

Congressman Darrell Issa, R-Vista, is in the toughest race of his 16-year political career. In the June primary, a political unknown — retired Marine colonel and attorney — l came within striking distance. Many are blaming his support of Donald Trump.

Issa issued a statement over the weekend, reacting to the Access Hollywood video that depicted the GOP nominee making lewd sexual comments. While other Republicans in tight races pulled their support, Issa did not. In an emailed statement, Issa said "he found these comments and behavior wholly inappropriate, offensive and unfitting of anyone seeking to lead our nation. There is never a time or place where it's appropriate to make jokes about sexual assault."

In the past, the 49th Congressional District, which straddles San Diego and Orange counties, has proven to be reliably Republican.

During his time in Washington, D.C., Issa has built a reputation as a firebrand, digging into the controversies on Capitol Hill, like Hillary Clinton's email server. The former chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform was at the center of the Congressional investigations into the "Fast and Furious" gun-buying operation of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

San Diego Trump supporter and multi-millionaire is in a tough re-election fight. Given Issa's willingness to try to overturn election results with his push to recall Governor Gray Davis and his calls to impeach President Obama, if he is still in office, I expect him to work full time to throw out a Hillary Clinton victory.

I lived in the OC the year Issa was elected.

He was actually a nearly-unknown underdog in the 2000 GOP primary for the open seat, which everyone from the OC Register to your average anchor baby-bemoaning church lady assumed would go to State Senator Bill Morrow.

Just before the primary though, Darrell Issa placards began appearing in all the major south Orange County thoroughfares - with the picture of a square-jawed All-American type with a Cheshire Cat grin.

It was a photo of another man.

This may seem like a trivial detail; but remember that this is south Orange County. Had voters realized at the time that the enterprising Mr. Issa is of Lebanese heritage, he would have probably lost. The rest, as you know, is history.

Did Issa ever give a reason why his placard had a photo of another?
Did any in the media ask?!

The primary came and went so quickly, most simply didn't notice. And with the exception of the OC Weekly, there really wasn't any real alternative media at the time to look into it in the first place.

But the good folks at Allstate caution that arson is no laughing matter.
