BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Authorities plan to file charges against a man and a woman accused of leaving 19 children ranging from 8 months to 14 years old unattended for a week in a sweltering, filthy home near Bowling Green. The children were found Monday night in a small three-bedroom rental home near Interstate 65 by officers who were responding to a complaint from a neighbor. It was littered with dog feces and had no air conditioning, Warren County Sheriff's Detective Tim Robinson said. "It's such an unusual circumstance to find 19 children like that, we're still putting things together right now," Robinson said. The adults, Irving "Joe" Smith and Jackie Farah, left town on June 27 and told a neighbor to check on the kids, Robinson said. They are expected to face charges when they return Read more: http://www.kentucky.com/2012/07/03/2247105/19-youngsters-found-unattended.html

1. Horrible. Ghastly. Those children need a stable home.
|
There's no way they will be able to place them all together, but perhaps they can place them near enough to one another so that they can see each other in school.
I am guessing there are no reliable relatives, otherwise they'd have stepped up. This is so sad. |

3. It sounds like the home was a stable.
|
How on earth can people do things like this?
It's hard to believe. I hope the kids are able to find good, loving homes. |

4. Where did they get 19 kids. Seems almost impossible to have 19 kids between age 0 and 14

8. ahh.. Hadn't considered that. Why would someone with 9 kids marry someone with 10?
|

5. Is this one of those weird cases of 'child hoarding' for welfare checks?
|
I've heard about something like this before, when a couple gets a dozen kids from Foster Care and pockets the funding check.

Lack of follow-up and supervision due to cutbacks.

19. Appears that they put all that responsibility on the 14 year old. Parents may have been seeking work
|
As well, and likely no childcare funding or agencies in Kentucky at the rate it's going with Rand Paul slashing and burning the social safety net as fast as he can. I haven't been through KY for many years, but passing through, some of it was beautiful. No idea what is going on there now.

sterilize and release them.
This is done on the grounds that they are breeding out of control, spreading disease, and ultimately causing more suffering within their populations due to overbreeding. Huh. |
