Demand for US factory goods rose in May, but sharp declines the two months prior and weak industry data for June demonstrated the toll on the manufacturing sector from the slowdown in the global economy.
Factory orders rose by 0.7 per cent, more than analysts’ forecasts of a 0.1 per cent rise, commerce department statistics showed.
Orders had stumbled in April and March, and April’s orders were revised downwards to show a 0.7 per cent decline following March’s 2.1 per cent decrease, further denting confidence in the world’s largest economy.
The May data followed a report on Monday that US manufacturing activity unexpectedly contracted in June, rocking confidence in one of the bright spots of America’s economic recovery.
